Losing and the sheer length of baseball games have inspired the Internet to look off the field for entertainment. And in the midst of that 12-game losing streak (the Royals have since gone 5-5), memes came from two very different sources: a bookish gentleman and a bunch of boobs.
Whether it was a sign of things to come or simply the act of one desperately bored child - Royals fans first made national waves with the boy who threw back a foul ball that his dad had just caught. The losing streak at that point was a mere nine games, and the media seemed to revel in the idea that fans didn't even want a souvenir of what they were seeing.
Next up to the plate was Royals Book Guy - a fan sitting in the first row behind home plate - who opted to read rather than watch the last two innings of a loss against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 23. He seemed to be saying: You can make me pay for my seats, but you can't make me watch the game. Anyone know who this guy is? The photos went viral, and a parody Twitter account started and has gained 770 followers.
The last meme to get developed owes its origins to the University of Kansas. In the same vein as #KUboobs comes #Royalsboobs - a Twitter feed dedicated to those who choose to wear their uniforms like Manny Ramirez once did - in ill-fitting, yet stylish fashion. This is easily the greatest thing to happen to female baseball fans since Alyssa Milano designed a collection for Major League Baseball.
