The Pitch Questionnaire with Joe Cox, Barkley's director of social media

Posted by on Wed, May 16, 2012 at 6:03 AM

Name: Joe Cox

Occupation: Director of social media at Barkley

Hometown: Pleasant Hill, Missouri

Current neighborhood: Spring Valley, 43rd Avenue and Rainbow, the 'Dotte

Who or what is your sidekick? If you know my wife, the answer is easy. She's the best partner in crime ever. My iPhone comes in at a very distant second. Life wouldn't be worth living without Bejeweled Blitz and Instagram.

What career would you choose in an alternate reality? Hmm. Not sure. All I'm picturing is some bizzaro world out there where I'm some kind of survivalist. I'm really infatuated with all of those shows like Survivorman, for some reason, even though I'm hopelessly dependent on my tech.

What was the last local restaurant you patronized? Piropos in Parkville. Food was good, wine was better, but the view overlooking downtown Parkville is a must for summer dining.

Where do you drink? Twin City Tavern, my favorite neighborhood pub in the city.

What's your favorite charity? Water.org is doing some amazing things and really gets how to talk to and build its community through social. Would love to work with them more.

Favorite place to spend your paycheck: The one-button purchase for Kindle books on my iPad is a dangerous thing. In fact, purchasing apps off the iTunes market is a bit of a sickness for me. Try Paper by FiftyThree. It's pretty amazing.

Where do you like to take out-of-town guests? Usually for drinks and pizza at Grinders, especially if there is a show that weekend.

Finish this sentence: "Other than the Kauffman Center, Kansas City got it right when ... " We decided to go after Google Fiber and when we elected Mayor Sly James. That guy is so cool, he's frosty.

"Kansas City screwed up when it ... " Shut down the Grand Emporium! What was that about?

"Kansas City needs ... " More start-ups, entrepreneurial mindsets and food trucks.

"People might be surprised to know that I ... " Am a classically trained opera singer. No shit, it's the truth.

"If I were in charge ... " High-fives would be currency.

What TV shows do you make sure you watch? Can't miss Game of Thrones, Comic Book Men and The Pitch.

_____ take up a lot of space in my iTunes: Bluegrass and party rock

What movie do you watch at least once a year? Better Off Dead

What local tradition do you take part in every year? Winfield bluegrass festival. Best time on two feet.

Celebrity you'd like to ride the Mamba with at Worlds of Fun: Anthony Bourdain. Is he not the coolest dude on the planet?

Favorite person or thing to follow on Twitter: @Drunkhulk or @SMCKC - it's a tossup.

What subscription - print, digital, etc. - do you value most? Flipboard hooked up to my Twitter feed, and GoogleReader rocks my socks.

Last book you read: The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Read it. It'll change your life.

Favorite day trip: Truman Lake to go visit my parents and ride scooters around Warsaw, Missouri.

What was your most embarrassing dating moment? It's hazy, but I think it happened after I ordered the second pitcher of margaritas at Ponak's.

Interesting brush with the law? In college, they sent a sheriff to our apartment because I had never returned Tecmo Super Bowl to the local video store. I thought that was really funny, up until I was in the back of the cop car.

Describe a recent triumph: I recently got my gig at Barkley. It took a lot of work to get where I am, and it feels ridiculously good to be right where I am. Working with smart people, making awesome things, and there's a rocket on our building.

Joe Cox is president of Social Media Club KC.
