Original post: For a change, the most intriguing posts on the Kansas City Craigslist site aren't in the "missed connections" or on a personals page. No, a Raytown resident trying unload a crappy bookcase and a coffee table has turned the "For sale/wanted" page the most interesting and the strangest.
The two posts - which are more than 500 words each - are titled "THINGS OF STEVEN - Coffee Table of Prosperity - $10" and "THINGS OF STEVEN - Mildly Depressed Bookcase - $20." And they are worth reading. The intro for the coffee table post is a 175-word sentence that begins:
"I, your humble yet illustrious reporter, lifelong servant to the will of the public, champion of the people, awarded 'Best Pecs' by Boy Frenzy magazine five times from 2002-2009, emissary of goodwill, and of course, loyal confidante of Steven - a gentleman who, I am sure, needs no introduction, whose distinction is without peer, of whose benevolence the cup of humanity runneth over..."
George Toma, the Royals longtime groundskeeper and a field-tending legend will be inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame during a pregame ceremony on August 31, the team announced today. Toma started his Kansas City career in 1957, caring for the field at the old Municipal Stadium at 22nd Street and Brooklyn when the Athletics played there. He will be the 25th member of the hall.
He quickly became known worldwide for his ability to rehab fields and keep both turf and grass in peak shape. He worked for the Chiefs, led crews at several Super Bowls and Pro Bowls during his career. Earlier this year he was one of two inaugural members of the MLB Groundskeeper Association Hall of Fame.
Preston, 23, was rushed to a local hospital around 4:14 p.m. but died from his injuries. The other shooting victim is in stable condition.
Preston was believed to be a resident of Kansas City, Missouri. He is KCMO's 49th homicide victim of 2012. Preston had no ties to the YMCA.

The Kansas City Health Department announced Thursday that it suspects heat played a role in the deaths of a 60-year-old man and a 1-year-old boy. The entire Kansas City metro is under an excessive heat warning. On Thursday temperatures in Kansas City hit 107. The excessive heat warning expires for Kansas City on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Kansas City area YMCAs and Salvation Army locations and community centers are open as cooling centers for those without air conditioning. There's a full list of locations and times here.

The wait is over for two former University of Kansas basketball stars. Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor can get back to playing basketball. Robinson was the fifth overall pick in the draft, selected by the Sacramento Kings, while Taylor was taken 41st overall for the Brooklyn Nets. A guy known for his even demeanor off the court, Robinson was clearly choked up as he hugged his 9-year-old sister Jayla after his name was called by NBA commissioner David Stern.
"I worked hard to get here and to see it all right in front of me, I got emotional," Robinson told the San-Jose Mercury News. "It was everything. Everything that I had been holding in came out."
Waldo and her husband, Ryan, are facing first-degree charges of charges child endangerment. After the attack in January 2011, the couple reportedly told police they were awoken by screaming and found the bloodied child in their living room. Investigators later subpenaed the couple's phone records and found they had been used in several areas during the time of the attack.
The Waldos also missed a court appearance last November. Ryan Waldo's lawyer told a judge that he believed the pair were in Indiana at the time. An arrest warrant was issued for them.
Carrie Waldo's pretrial hearing was rescheduled for November. If she fails to appear, another arrest warrant will be issued.
Kansas City was apparently selected because of Calvin Trillin's repeated assertions that the institutions of his city were the apex of eating. And while Gold, Sietsma and the article's author Peter Meehan (who co-founded Lucky Peach with Momofuku chef David Chang), are aware that Trillin was often singing the praises of Arthur Bryant's, it is the ribs at Oklahoma Joe's that are tucking into as the tape recorder rolls.
