But if you've got a few bucks in your pocket still and can make your way down to the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, you can get a glimpse into the history of a local flier: Trans World Airlines. The TWA Museum is scheduled to open today at 10 Richards Road with a 5:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house until 7.
The space at Richards Road is the former headquarters of TWA in Kansas City. Charles Lindbergh dedicated the adjacent airfield in 1927, and four years later, TWA broke ground on the building. The museum is leasing space from the current tenant, Signature Flight Support/BBA Innovation (formerly known as Executive Beechcraft).
The collection of aviation memorabilia had previously been displayed and stored at the KCI Expo Center and the airline's Overhaul Base. The museum is run by Pam Blaschum and Mary Ellen Miller, two former flight attendants for TWA, who talked to The Kansas City star about the next chapter for the museum.
The TWA Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
