And so a day after Kansas City is being lauded for the ability to purchase tickets for the Futures Game and the Celebrity Softball Game, the narrative has flipped to suggest that fans are pouring their invective, cultivated from nearly three decades of losing, into one man in pinstripes.
The fans see Butler's 16 home runs and the color of his jersey and believe that he'd earned the right to compete. Cano sees a guy who crushes sandwiches and line drives but isn't a pure home-run hitter. Neither is wrong. You can take the booing as a sign of passion or classlessness, but the reality is that it was a moment for pundits during an exhibition game. And it won't take away from the moment tonight when Butler is announced as an All-Star.
"Baseball fans are going to boo. That's what they do," said sportscaster Jack Harry before the derby.
