When Olathe drivers get behind the wheel, it's apparently hands at 10-and-two and a commitment to signaling before switching lanes. In the eighth annual "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report," produced by the Allstate Insurance Co., Olathe is ranked as the 14th safest driving city.

Olathe-ites are 15.2 percent less likely to get into a crash as the average driver and go 11.8 years between crashes. So if you live in Olathe and are approaching a decade of crash-free driving, maybe try and put off that new car purchase for a few years.

The safest driving city is Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where drivers go 13.8 years between crashes. It's likely not a stretch to assume that there are fewer distractions in South Dakota. Drivers in Kansas City, Missouri, go 11.7 years between crashes, making them the 16th safest, while Kansas City, Kansas, drivers only make it 11.6 years (21st in the nation).

As for methodology, Allstate estimates that it represents 10 percent of all drivers on the road. The insurance company calculated the "internal property damage reported claims" (in English, crashes) for the 200 largest cities, using data culled from January 2009 through December 2010.

One might expect the next study to show improvement on the Kansas side based on how long drivers have been off the road and waiting at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
