Trust Women Foundation bought former Tiller clinic to reopen it

Posted by on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Tillers clinic will reopen.
  • Tiller's clinic will reopen.
The abortion clinic formerly operated by the late Dr. George Tiller will reopen as a women's and children's health clinic where a Wichita nonprofit intends to offer abortion services.

The Associated Press reports that the Trust Women Foundation Inc. purchased the shuttered clinic last month. Executive Director Julia Burkhart explained that the new clinic will not perform late-term abortions but will conduct procedures earlier in a woman's pregnancy. [In November of last year, The Pitch's Justin Kendall looked at the charged atmosphere over abortion in Kansas based on the state's dogged pursuit of Ann Kristin Neuhaus, a doctor who had provided second-opinion mental-health exams to Tiller's patients seeking late-term abortions.]

The facility has been closed since Tiller was murdered by Scott Roeder in May 2009. Trust Women is looking to open the clinic between November and January of 2013.

When we last caught up with Sean Hunt, aka Approach, in May, his label, Datura, was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Hunt mentioned at the time that there were a couple of projects he’d been sitting on for a while that he was excited about and was just waiting for the right moment to release (the guy always has so many irons in the fire, he’s probably sitting on five albums as we speak). It appears as though the time has come for at least one of them to be set free to the world, with the release on Monday of his work with underground Milwaukee musician J. Todd. (Read an A.V. Club interview with J. Todd here.)

KCPD's ShotSpotter system goes live this weekend

Posted by on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Police arent defining the 3.55 mile area within the system.
  • Police aren't defining the 3.55 mile area within the system.
The KCPD announced Wednesday that the its new ShotSpotter Flex gunfire recognition system will go live this weekend or by Monday at the latest. The system built by SST Systems features noise collectors that triangulate the location of fired shots and will cover 3.55 square miles of the city.

The ShotSpotter hardware captures loud audio that could be gunfire, then sends the sound to an SST analyst in Newark, California who determines if it was shots or another noise. If it's determined to be gunfire, the SST employee contacts Kansas City Police dispatch and gives them the location — including latitude and longitude and street addresses — and the number of the shots fired. The dispatcher then sends officers nearby to the scene. According to a police press release, the officers will respond to a ShotSpotter alert as if it was a shots fired 911 call. SST says the whole process takes 45-60 seconds.

Police aren’t disclosing the locations of the hardware. But they say the area will include the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority’s Troost MAX line and some of the Green Impact Zone. Earlier this year, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver announced he had found federal transportation money for the project. The KCATA is the agency leading the project. A total budget of $720,000 will fund the system and maintenance for five years.

What's the finest drink to recently cross your lips?

Empty glasses are like unfulfilled dreams.

In a bid to hold on to summer, I've had a rotating cup of Toddy coffee in my car's cup holder for the last three days — the finest one coming courtesy of the Broadway Cafe. That puppy needs no milk or sugar, just a Gooey Pumpkin Butter Bar as an accoutrement.

But I'm also ready to put the car in park and belly up to the bar or counter that has recently best wet your whistle. Who has brought you the greatest drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) recently?

John Couture walks through the door of the Waldo coffeehouse One More Cup, taking a break from gathering neighborhood signatures for Bier Station. His new tavern and bottle shop, at 120 East Gregory, is slated to open in December.

“Nice T-shirt,” says Stacy Neff, the coffee shop’s co-owner, from behind the counter.

“It’s the first one,” Couture says, glancing down at his shirt, which shows the company’s logo: a cartoon beer glass at the end of railroad tracks. After a minute spent staring at the menu, he asks for a recommendation. Neff suggests an iced root-beer chai.

“I like all beer — root beer, beer,” Couture says. “Let’s do it.”

  • Babb's leaving for Washington D.C. this week.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t help Kent Babb pack, but the team’s general manager, Scott Pioli, probably popped a champagne cork at 1 Arrowhead Drive when he heard that Babb was moving. The Kansas City Star sports columnist and former Chiefs beat writer recently accepted a position as a sports-enterprise reporter with The Washington Post. He starts his new gig October 1.

In January, the 30-year-old journalist sent shock waves through the Chiefs’ front office when he exposed the team’s culture of secrecy and intimidation. His Star story, slugged “Arrowhead Anxiety,” made national headlines with its tales of micromanagement and sourced allegations of phone tapping. The Pitch caught up with Babb last week as he prepared to take off for Washington, D.C.
