If Rube Goldberg were interested in campaign finance reform, he might have built the Amend-O-Matic. In an effort to call attention to corporate political influence derived from campaign contributions, the Move to Amend Coalition, with support from Ben & Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen, is touring the country in a truck nicknamed the "stamp mobile."
The Amend-O-Matic will be in front of the Westport Flea Market (817 Westport Road) beginning at 2 p.m. today. People can place a dollar inside the winding, primary-colored device and have it returned with a stamp that reads, "A corporation is not a person, money is not speech." A community workshop, led by Move to Amend's Ashley Sanders and Renae Widdison, about the tour and the coalition's aims will start at 6 p.m. inside the Westport Flea Market.
Launched in 2009, Move to Amend has vigorously opposed the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling. The organization is advocating for a constitutional amendment that would declare that corporations are not people and money is not protected Free Speech (thus, campaign contributions can be limited). The nationwide tour began in California earlier this month and will end in Gainesville, Florida, on December 14.
