Regardless of how Kansas Citians feel about Kansas City International Airport, there were fewer passengers on flights out of KCI in 2012. The airport reports that passenger boardings (people getting on flights) was down 3.9 percent in 2012 (with boardings decreasing by 11.6 percent in December alone) as compared with the same time period in 2011.

"We ended up in a down year because of significant decreases in airline departures and available seats in the market plus increased average fares," said Tom McKenna, assistant director of aviation marketing for the Aviation Department, in a release.

The Aviation Department is currently in the middle of a $4 million feasibility study to look at how the airport might go from three terminals to a single terminal. Earlier this month, the Kansas City Business Journal noted that the study would be delayed because the initial design ran over the estimated budget of $1.2 billion. The study was expected to be released in two phases, the first portion scheduled to be presented to the City Council in February. Now, that part of the report (which looks at financing and design) isn't expected to be ready until April.

Do you think lower traffic numbers indicate a need for a change at KCI or are evidence of a downward trend that suggests now is not the right time for an overhaul?
