- Here's your shot to be in the huddle.
If you think you have skills on the pitch beyond FIFA 2013, you can give Sporting KC $208 to find out. The local soccer team is holding open tryouts
for the sixth year - a practice that dates back to the days of the Kansas City Wizards - June 15 and 16. Spots on the first day go to the first 200 people who register. Tryout participants must be at least 18 years of age and have $208. That $208 only guarantees a look on the first day of scrimmages. That's when the first round of cuts hit and the tryouts likely move away from fantasy camp on the needle toward aspiring professionals.
To those who suggest that the tryouts are a cash grab (200 players at $208 per pop is $41,600), Sporting KC can point toward midfielder Josh Gardner. Acquired in a December trade with the Montreal Impact, Gardner attended an open tryout with Sporting two years ago and earned an invite to camp. He didn't make the final cut then, but did go on to play for the Columbus Crew that year. Back in 2008, Kevin Souter and Nelson Pizarro played for then Wizards after attending an open tryout earlier in the year - the first since the team's inaugural season in 1996.
