A mere five months away!
Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and impossibly cute indie songstress St. Vincent teamed up last year for an album, Love This Giant. They're touring together, and stopping at Crossroads KC at Grinders this summer, on Friday, July 12. Imagine how warm it will be that day!
Sammy's Pizza & Pub (13164 State Line) has closed in Leawood. The pizza joint in the former Zepi's Pizza space was open for just under a year. The pizza was nothing if not inventive. They offered Coney Island Pizza (chili coney dog reimagined as a pie), nut-free pesto, and the Mahalo, which featured Canadian bacon, pineapple and chicken teriyaki. Sammy's, owned and operated by David Royce, opened in March 2012.
In addition to the local groups planning fundraising events or arranging for donation sites for the employees of JJ's Restaurant, the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association has organized a one-day, citywide effort for Kansas City restaurants and diners to raise money. Tomorrow - Saturday, February 23 - nearly 50 area restaurants are donating 10 percent of sales to the JJ's Restaurant Fund. This fund has been set up by, and will be managed by, the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association, according to that group's executive director, Steve Cole. He says that "all funds collected will be provided to JJ's Restaurant owner Jimmy Frantze, to help his staff convalesce." For a list of participating restaurants, click here.
So now you're definitely eating out tomorrow night.
The explosion at JJ's Restaurant has been one of the worst local restaurant tragedies in decades.
Update: In addition to the local groups planning fundraising events or arranging for donation sites for the employees of JJ's Restaurant (see original post, below), the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association has organized a one-day, citywide effort for Kansas City restaurants and diners to raise money. The original Wednesday Fat City post follows after the jump.
Close your eyes for a minute. Let the crack of a branch become the crack of a bat. Let sludge-lined streets become the chalk line between home and first. And let that snow stuck to your shovel be the head on a freshly poured stadium beer. The Kansas City Royals tweeted out the above photo. It's the first lineup of 2013, assembled for their opening spring training contest against the Texas Rangers at 2:05 p.m. today. Here's how Salvador Perez and Bruce Chen have been preparing for the game [h/t I-70 Baseball]
Baseball is back. The Royals are undefeated. It's time to play ball.
Thorne-Thomsen has plenty to smile about these days.
Three Kansas City chefs took their first steps toward immortality earlier this week. The semifinalists for the James Beard Awards were announced Tuesday, and three local chefs are among the nominees for Best Chef: Midwest: Martin Heuser of Affare, Colby Garrelts of Bluestem [Garrelts' second restaurant Rye is this week's review] and Carl Thorne-Thomsen of Story.
This marks the first nomination for Heuser and Thorne-Thomsen and the seventh for Garrelts (the entire field of 22 chefs can be seen here). The finalists will be announced Monday, March 18. The awards dinner and ceremony is slated for Monday, May 6.
Chuck Magerl could probably use a beer right about now. The founder of the Free State Brewing Co. is in the midst of a whole lot of projects. The new bottling line (which will quadruple Free State's bottling speed) at the brewery's production facility is set to come online in the next few days. The sold-out Kansas Craft Brewers Expo (you might be able to find a ticket on Craigslist) is next Saturday, and this weekend is the 24th anniversary for his Lawrence brewpub at 636 Massachusetts.
"We'll be tapping some of our brewers' reserves," Magerl says of the anniversary party. "And anybody that shares our birthday gets a discount based on their age. So far, the oldest we've had is an 86-year-old. I keep telling people I want a 101-year-old person to come in, so I can pay them."
Canstructions in past years have included a water-bottle igloo.
Warhol may have immortalized Campbell's soup cans on canvas, but true pop art is on display this week at Ward Parkway Center (8600 Ward Parkway). Canstruction, the annual food drive and design-and-build competition to benefit Harvesters, kicks off today with a build day. Local architects, contractors and artists come together to design sculptures out of nonperishable canned goods that will be displayed through Thursday, March 21.
There's a VIP preview party with cocktails Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
