James has been in the news for his scrapes with the law several times over the last couple of years. In August 2011, he was accused of punching a woman in the face outside the Point bar. The alleged victim didn't show up to a court appearance, so the charges were dropped.
That same month, he was accused of refusing to pay his tab at the now-shuttered Fran's restaurant in the Power & Light District. In that dust-up, he threatened a police officer's job. He later apologized for his behavior. He was also given a ride home by officers following a fight at the Brooksider bar in April 2012. In December of last year, he was arrested in Johnson County on an outstanding warrant.
Last September, James and his musical collaborator Kemet "thePhantom*" Coleman were the subject of a Pitch feature. In the piece, James said the media attention he received from the incident at the Point cost him a job waiting tables. "I actually lost my job," he told us. "I couldn't go to work because of this shit."
