This photo captures more than just downtown architecture.

Memories can be found in every nook and cranny of this city. For Paul Ingold, this photo is more than just a picture of art deco buildings reflected in another building's modern glass windows. It's a portal to his grandmother's past, a snapshot of days she's slowly forgetting.

Sing it, girl!
To say I love drag queens is akin to saying Kansas City likes its barbeque. A duh, it goes without saying. The bravada, the costumes, the lip syncing to divas of decades past... they give us natural born ladies a run for our dolla dolla bills, y'all.

In honor of this weekend's Second Annual Latino Gay Pride Festival, this week's Flickr Pool Pic of the Week is again from pool member Brian Spoonemore (who caught my attention last week with his picture, "Looking up" ).

Nothing like lounging in a park over the weekend to take your mind off the slings and arrows of a long workweek. On any given Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting, you can find tons of families and friends sprawled out on the grass at Loose Park or the front lawn of the Nelson Atkins Museum.

This long Labor Day weekend is the last summer holiday before the weather takes a turn for the fall, a.k.a. the end of picnic weather. That's what drew me to Pitch Flickr pool member Brian Spoonemore's picture "Looking up."

'Love Birds': The Pitch Flickr Pool Pic of the Week

Get a room, you love birds!
  • Get a room, you love birds!

If a childhood shaped by Sweet Valley High books and the opening scene of "Grease" has taught me one thing, it's that summer is meant for flings. With the fall months fast approaching, it's time to hold your lover close before layers of wool and knits come between you.

Even animals are known to get in some couple time before the cold descends, as this picture of two birds caught mid-necking shows. Pitch Flickr pool member Joey A. Dominguez took this picture last summer while visiting the Kansas City Zoo.

Royals losing...again? Might as well get a drink.
  • Royals losing...again? Might as well get a drink.

Royals fans don't get nearly as much credit as they should for their undivided love and support of an often disappointing team. You don't hear us blaming crappy performances on curses like those foolhardy Cubs fans (though we have our fair share of them). No, we diligently stream into the K, cheering and shouting invectives to the sky, only to come out with another loss under our belts.

But when the going gets tough, the tough get drinkin' at the Stadium Club. It was here that Pitch Flickr Pool member Jeremy Jewell captured this candid photo.

We love our music here in Kansas City, almost as much as our barbecue. While the local scene hasn't become a huge national export, it's home to talent we hope one day will get off our porch and make it big in the "real world." The Pitch celebrates Kansas City's homegrown musicians every day, this weekend in particular with the Pitch Music Awards this Sunday at the Uptown.

Of course, we can't nominate and award every band or musician in the KC-area. But the lo-fi folk of KCK band for the birds is just one of many local acts we admire. Pitch Flickr Pool member Sarah McDonald took this picture of them in July.

  • Boys will be boys.

There's something about this photo that screams Stand By Me, or any other movie chronicling a boy's troubled passage into manhood. Maybe it's the nostalgic lighting reminiscent of this Depression era photo. Maybe it's the mighty Missouri river to their backs, or their knowing expressions. Something's comin' and it ain't good.

Bright and happy amidst the gritty and dull backdrop of downtown Kansas City, her hands waving like she just doesn't care, "India in KC" makes me want to bust a move or two next to this lovely dance partner.

Kansas City may be known best for its barbecue, but the city has another draw: its fountains.

The J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain greets you as you enter the Plaza from the east on 47th Street. The 80 foot wide fountain is majestic in its size and subject matter: four horses and their riders in various acts of battle.

Pitch Flickr pool member Adam Bales thought it would make a great subject for one of his first pictures with a digital SLR camera.

Kansas City is home to the official national World War I Museum located at Liberty Memorial. The limestone obelisk and twin sphinx shielding their eyes draws in tourists from all over the country, like the couple in our Pic of the Week.

Pitch Flickr Pool member Denzil Burriss caught this moment while trying to get a photo of Union Station and downtown KC.
