  • Studies in Crap: The Gamecock, May 1966

Each Thursday, your Crap Archivist brings you the finest in forgotten and bewildering crap culled from area basements, thrift stores, estate sales and flea markets. He does this for one reason: Knowledge is power. The Gamecock Date: May 1966 Discovered at: Prairie Village Antique Mall The cover promises: "The Monthly Magazine Devoted to Game Fowl." Also: if you own this, you are probably a terrible person. Representative quotes: "Somewhere along the line we supposedly human creatures, m

  • Now it's the Swedes

A big Fat City congratulations to fellow Pitch blogger Alan Scherstuhl who has made the big time. By big time I am of course referring to a Swedish newspaper publishing a picture of Scherstuhl's cat eating Rush Limbaugh's grandma's Jell-O salad. (How many possessives can one sentence have?)Running the caption through an online translator it reads: "Here we have an "Under the sea salad", consisting of Jell-O, cream cheese and black olives. The being at the top of the image is Limbaugh shortly bef

  • They love us! They really love us!

Plog's two sisters took the home the Gold and Silver awards in the Blog category at the Kansas City Press Club's Heart of America Awards banquet on Saturday night. Journalists in the Los Angeles Press Club, who judged our local contest, deemed Jason Harper's Wayward Blog the best in Kansas City, followed by Charles Ferruzza and Owen Morris' Fat City.Judges called Harper's blog "a funny, profane chronicle of the local music scene with an engaged and opinionated audience." They said Fat City was "

  • Every kitchen needs one...

With apologies to Alan Scherstuhl, Pitch archivist of the brilliant and the bizarre, I must share with all of Fat City my own recent historical find, a hardbound book titled Household Equipment which I discovered over the weekend in the FleaMart. You haven't heard of the new-ish FleaMart? It's the clean and shiny flea emporium at 14300 E. Highway 40, in the location formerly occupied by Rick's Picks, once the vendor of all kinds of fabulous salvage treasures, including dozens of

  • KC Rep offers free show to public service employees

Pitch theater critic Alan Scherstuhl tells me that "Into the Woods" is the best show he's ever seen at the Kansas City Rep. So if you're a public service employee and you're free Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Kansas City Repertory Theatre has a great deal. You can see the show for free. Here's the full details: If you're a solider, police officer, firefighter, EMT, ambulance driver or a city or county worker in Jackson, Johnson, Wyandotte, Clay or Platte counties, then you're eligible for free ticket

  • Relic Tray: Dining Out 1976

Who cares about the food? Give me a gold ring!Leave it to Pitch archivist Alan Scherstuhl to find the most amazing treasures in Fat City. This 32-page special insert to the Kansas City Star dates back to August 8, 1976, just days before the city hosted the Republican National Convention at Kemper Arena. The Republican delegates not only had to vote for a presidential candidate (Gerald Ford narrowly defeated a challenge from Ronald Reagan) -- they had to eat! So this tabloid i
