  • Candlelight vigil for George Tiller

Dozens gathered last night at the J.C. Nichols Fountain for a candlelight vigil for George Tiller. Amongst the crowd, reps from Planned Parenthood and the ACLU and Missouri state senator Jolie Justus. This slideshow reveals a lot of sad, confused and outraged people ... but also people determined to not let an act of terrorism like Tiller's murder scare them into keeping their mouths shut.

  • Cordish refuses to give balloons to children; dongs to women

We'd hoped that Cordish's removal of undesirables from the pulsing economic organ of chain bars and restaurants known as Power & Light was a one time thing. Sadly, it's not just preachers having a hard time. Many more have been turned away by those hearty few charged with protecting the virtue of PBR Big Sky's mechanical bull, the standing of what is apparently the city's only rock bar and the limited supply of Famous Dave's barbecue.

  • Windows smashed at ACLU office

Last Thursday, someone threw a "big ol' landscaping rock" through a set of glass doors at the American Civil Liberties Union's Kansas City office. ACLU Executive Dan Winter sent out an e-mail, saying the attack was the second in three weeks. I called Winter this morning to see why someone would chuck a rock through his front door. Winter told me that he thought the vandalism was planned given the type of rock thrown. But he has no idea who hurled the rock.  "It may be Phelps related," Winte

  • Funkhouser recall group lawyers up

Mark FunkhouserThe dump the Funk crew is threatening to take the recall recount to court if the Kansas City Council doesn't tell the city clerk to do the recount. The recall committee hired attorney Brett Shirk yesterday "to examine and pursue all available legal remedies to force" the election boards in Platte and Clay counties and Kansas City to do a recount. Here's the word from recall spokesman Harris Wilder:"While we remain hopeful that the City Council will take action to order a recount w

Did you know that there's an office at 635 Woodland that collects reports from local police departments about suspicious activities in the metro area and analyzes them for terrorist threats? And that "suspicious activities" can include taking pictures of questionable aesthetic value, lurking around potential terrorist targets like power plants and oil refineries, or looking up subversive stuff on the 'net? Amateur photographers who like staging photo shoots in the West Bottoms, you might wan

  • Missouri Libertarians: We're not terrorists!

According to a Missouri fusion center, these kids might be terrorists. When Mike Ferguson got a late-night alert about a report linking the Libertarian Party to domestic terrorism he thought it was the work of an overzealous blogger with bad information and a penchant for conspiracy. An official publication distributed to Missouri law enforcement agencies associating his party's 2008 presidential candidate, Bob Barr, with violent extremists? Surely not. Well, the leaked memo from a fusion center
