  • Star bribes Kansas Citians to read paper

Crack Pitch clubs editor Berry Anderson snapped this photo at Eighth Street and Walnut. She also spied another sign on Southwest Boulevard across from Manny's. Let's get this straight. The Kansas City Star's answer to falling stock prices, declining circulation and company-wide layoffs isn't providing better coverage of Kansas City -- it's bribing readers with a $25,000 grand prize?

  • The Download: New Strange Boys MP3

In the Red Records' back catalogue is littered with artists like the Dirtbombs, Jay Reatard and the King Kong & BBQ Show, so it's no surprise that the label's latest act has a garage-rock feel to it. Hailing from Austin, the Strange Boys are gearing up for their debut LP, The Strange Boys and Girls Club, out March 3. Download a track below, thanks to the Walrus, and stream a few more at the band's MySpace page. MP3: The Strange Boys, "Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up," The Strange Boys and Girls C

  • Missouri: Your State Auditor's son has a rock band.

Photo courtesy myspace.com/hotbot.Austin Montee's the one at the keyboard. Hot Bot is a noisy mess of synth and drums that features Austin Montee, son of Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee. I met the family back in 2006, when I was living in St. Joseph, which the local convention and visitor's bureau insists is the place where "the West officially started to get wild." Although a wildness in the historical Jesse James sense is very much appreciated in the township, the wild attire of hipster

  • Dispatch from SXSW: Bacon Shoe, the Republic Tigers

The South by Southwest music festival doesn't officially start until next Wednesday, but that hasn't stopped KC bands from making a few Austin appearances a little early. This is my first time at SXSW, and I was fortunate enough to make it down a little early for SXSW Interactive, the biggest geekfest since ... well, since ever, really. That's not an insult -- nerdiness is the new hotness, and if you're into Web or video game design, SXSWi is the place to be. You know you're at a super-nerdy co

  • Dispatch from SXSW: Back home and back pain

I'm writing this blog entry from my basement couch in Overland Park. Besides the ringing in my ears and a pain in my back and ribs that I can't remember aquiring, this seems like a world away from the aural and visual shitstorm that is Austin during South by Southwest. But I mean that in the nicest way. If anyone's looking for the expert's wrap-up of the hottest shows in Texas last week, you'll have to look elsewhere. My perspective was supposed to be different. My two friends and I (all SXSW f

  • Anarchy Tour Diary #10: Lost in Austin

Hail, hail! The 10th update from our roving anarchists PL, James Christos and Jamel Rockwell! PL: We made it to Austin, with little hassle. It was only warm, in comparison to Phoenix. Couldn't check into the hotel until 3, so we had a few hours to kill. We decided to relive our college days and began stealing stuff from the University of Texas. Nothing major: air conditioning, electricity, and internet. The experience made us consider going back to school. I can see me at 55, roaming the yard,

  • Anarchy Tour Diary #11: But for the Grace of God, to Houston

Wayward hip-hop anarchists James Christos, PL and Jamel Rockwell, continue their tour through Texas. Christos: What Up KC?! It's JC checking in. First let me say Austin is the ish!!! We had two shows and they were both great (shout to Xololanxinxo). It is truly the live entertainment capital of the country. There's live music on every corner on every street. It was surreal. You can pretty much just walk into a joint and say "I wanna play" and get a show. And they embrace all genres of musi

  • Sixth Annual North vs. South Festival Lineup

This August 20, 21 and 22, the North vs. South Music Festival, which began six years ago in Lawrence, returns to Kansas City for the third year in a row. Last year and the year before, the festival spanned multiple venues. This year, the whole thing is at Davey's, making ye olde Ramblers Club your one-stop shoppe for touring indie bands from here and up and down and all around the I-35 corridor.  The festival was founded by former Cher U.K. frontman Mike McCoy, who now lives in Austin and

  • Fun Fun Fun Fest Lineup Announced

The fourth annual Fun Fun Fun Fest (which is just as much fun to type as it is to say) just announced its lineup, and rather than copy, paste, and code each and every one of the 91 acts confirmed thus far, I'll let you take a gander at this lovely flier: Holy hell. The event takes place in Austin's Waterloo Park and runs November 7-8 , which is a pretty nice time of year to be in Texas, although one could argue that any time of year is a good time to be in Austin. Tickets are on sale rig

Got a yen to do the danse macabre tonight? Head down to Crossroads KC at Grinders tonight for an electro-dance cruise ship of awesomeness helmed by Austin synth-vocals duo Ghostland Observatory and openers the Glitch Mob, a scruffy, knob-twisting dance quartet from Cali. Get like PBS and watch these docu-videos about both acts. The first is a quaint little Central-Texas-made piece starring people with hefty drawls tawlking about Ghostland's unique aesthetic. (Kinda reminds me of Suicide

  • A Riverboat Gambler needs your help

We've got a soft spot for awesome musicians in need at the Wayward Blog, and few are as awesome or as in need as Ian MacDougall, guitarist for the Riverboat Gamblers, a band from Austin that's a favorite here in KC. Ian was hit by a car while riding his bike last Saturday and spent two days in the ICU. He's out of the ICU but is still hospitalized and is in for a long recovery: lots of tests, lots of therapy and LOTS OF BILLS. Jump over to the Help Ian Tumblr page to find out more details and

  • Looking For A Place to Stay?

We here at Wayward Blog are fond of traveling. In the past year, I've managed to make it to Chicago, New York, and Austin. However, when I travel, I tend to stay at what might be referred to as "economical" accommodations. My logic is that I'm going to be out doing stuff, and all I really need is a bed and a door that locks. analogapartment.comHowever, when I next make my way out of the area, I think I might have to upgrade. Analog Apartment has an interview with Alex Calderwood, owner
