Not a lot coming out today, but there are a few releases worth taking note of. Long-running SoCal punk rockers Rancid release their seventh full-length, Let the Dominoes Fall, on Hellcat. You'll have just enough time to learn the words (hint: there will be copious use of the words "yeah" and "whoah-oh") before they play the Beaumont's Back Yard next Friday with Rise Against and the Riverboat Gamblers. • Incoming: Franz Ferdinand at the Beaumont

I said you don't know. You said don't you know. I said ... take me out. To Franz Ferdinand. April 27. The Beaumont. It's not up yet on the group's MySpace, but a not unreliable source tells us it is so. I wish they were playing just about anywhere than the Breaumont, but I'll survive. More dates and the best video of the year so far after the jump.

  • Tonight: Brokencyde at the Beaumont Club (hell no!), Madeleine Peyroux at the Folly (hell yes!)

The only reason the name Brokencyde or (blarf) brokeNCYDE means anything to me is because of regular contributor and former Pitch music editor Andrew Miller's comprehensively scathing and hilarious look at the band's career on SomethingAwful.com a few weeks ago. My stomach still hurts a little now from laughing so hard. At the same time, I'm also hurting from the fact that I'm now familiar with this stridently awful group. And now you will hurt too. No, that is not a mashup. Your ears reall

  • Concert Review: Franz Ferdinand at the Beaumont

Apparently, Franz Ferdinand pretty much took over Westport yesterday. It started early, with a KRBZ 96.5 FM-sponsored "Kegs and Eggs" acoustic show at the Firefly. According to reports, people began waiting outside at 6 a.m. or earlier. I'm not sure when they began letting folks inside, but they had to turn some away. The lucky ones got to nosh on a breakfast buffet and get drinks at the bar -- and then go to work and throw up in their cubicles. Scott SpychalskiFranz leader Alex Kapranos st

  • Incoming: the Aggrolites to play Rancid afterparty

With their nails name and quasi-skinhead looks, the Aggrolites don't seem like the kind of band you'd take to a party -- unless you wanted to bust it up. However, these L.A. cats are purveyors of some of the smoothest, most laid back, classic ska and feelgood reggae around. After all, they just contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the upcoming screwball comedy National Lampoon Presents Endless Bummer. The band is coming to KC behind their fourth album, out June 9 on Hellcat. The show's at

Tickets go on sale this Friday, July 10, at 5pm. As an added bonus, the folks putting on the show--Hunt Industries--made the following offer via their MySpace: Are you in a band? • Pitch Music Showcase Roundup: the Beaumont Club

It's safe to say that the night of the Showcase is one of the best nights of the year to go out... even better than New Year's Eve, Irish Fest, Rock Fest, the first First Friday of the summer or your cousin from Blue Springs' bachelor or bachelorette party at Toby Keith's. It's awesome. You don't even have to be a hipster to have fun. It'll be hard to ever again find the energy I felt back in 2006 at the Showcase when onemilliontinytinyjesuses had a packed house at the Dark Horse standing in wi

  • Pitch Music Showcase Roundup: All Freakin' Over

I'm not sure whether it was Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler arriving in their limo to a gaggle of paparazzi outside of the Riot Room or if it was seeing Kurt Loder interviewing T-Pain on the roof of McCoy's, but somewhere between those two sightings -- but two incidents within a major-media-filled, celebrity-packed evening -- I realized, Man, the Pitch Music Showcase has gotten sorta big. Then I realized someone had slipped peyote into Hefeweizen. Forester MichaelClick on piano cat for sli

  • Concert Review: Atmosphere at the Beaumont

I'll say this up front: I'm not a fan of I-hate-my-girlfriend hip-hop. I'm not much of a fan of personalizing concert reviews, either. But in bringing myself to write a positive review of Atmosphere, an underground rap group from Minneapolis who flawlessly rocked a small crowd at the Beaumont Club Friday night, I've had to ditch a few of my well-heeled perspectives.Dan MonickAtmosphere's Ant (left) and Slug The fact is, music critics and reviewers have opinions. Celebrity blogger turned trainwreck of a celebrity himself Perez Hilton has the Perez Hilton Presents tour coming through Kansas City and hitting the Beaumont on September 23 with co-headliners Ladyhawke and Ida Maria, who rocked the Granada this past weekend and the Beaumont back in June. Aaron LucyLadyhawkeNow, both of these acts are pretty stellar, and it's nice to see female-fronted acts that don't trade in sex-kitten poses, instead showing that women can be strong without being tota

  • Here We Go, Here We Go, Here We Go!

Funny how things work out sometimes. I hadn't seen the Bouncing Souls since 1999 until this past March, and by the time the year is over, I'll have seen them three times in nine months. They're playing the Beaumont on November 4 with Bayside and Broadway Calls. It's their 20th anniversary tour, and so maybe they'll continue to dig into the rarely-played bag and do something old-school. I'm hoping for "Neurotic." Check out the country-punk version of the Misfits' "Hybrid Moments" they've

  • Tonight: Out-rockin' music from Oregon at the Record Bar

After you get your eyes peeled off at the Tivoli by the Ssion's Boy premiere, head down to the Record Bar and seal the deal with a trifecta of weirdity, courtesy of a local drone master and a couple of Oregon kooks. Who knows, perhaps fellow Beaver Staters the Dandy Warhols will drop by after their show at the Beaumont? The Dandy Warhols are playing tonight at the Beaumont, but evidently the band arrived yesterday "to check things out." Those things included the Westport Flea Market's Strangely Oblong Burger Van (pictured above with drummer Brent De Boer, though he's not the first), Arthur Bryant's, and a clothing store. Check it out here.

  • Incoming: Megadeth at the Beaumont, December 5

You read that right. Megadeth at the Beaumont? I'd figure they were at least Uptown material. megadeth.comStill...nice, right? Dave Mustaine didn't exactly get presented in the best light in Some Kind of Monster, but I'm actually more inclined to understand why he writes all of those songs that come off as a man tortured and oppressed. Dude's got issues, that's for sure, and I think I understand "Sweating Bullets" now. Megadeth is touring in support of their new album out today, entitle

  • Breaking News: Passion Pit has pulled out of show tonight at Beaumont.

We just received the news that Passion Pit, the headliner at tonight's free, KRBZ-sponsored show at the Back Yard at the Beaumont, has canceled its performance. Printed announcements were tacked up, including the one below, which had an additional message scrawled on it. At approximately 6 p.m., the band posted the following on Twitter: Kansas, we are sorry we had to cancel tonights show at the Beaumont. • 2009 Buzz Halloweenie Roast: Desperation, Angst and Jet

I was miserable for most of last night's KRBZ's Buzz Halloweenie Roast at the Beaumont. I felt like an alley cat -- friendless, weatherbeaten, a scavenging creature of the night. I had a bad cold coming on (whose intensification today accounts for the lateness of this review) and, what's worse, I had a rock in my shoe. There's nothing like a bad cold and a rock in your shoe to remind you that the life of a man is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." Scott SpychalskiClick on Adam Lee for

With Digable Planets tonight at the Bottleneck and P.O.S. at the Beaumont on Sunday -- and some killer local shows in between -- you won't be blamed for forgetting rock and roll even exists this weekend in Kansas City. Wait ... check that. For one thing, guitars will be present tonight at the Scion Lab when Mouth the band provides support for area rappers Reach, thePhantom, Dutch Newman, Godson and Swayzorblades. Depending on what Steddy P brings in terms of musical support (he's been
