  • The former altar boy's guide to Lent

Flickr: Mario_Groleau I've got a confession to make: I was still just an adorable little tot in the early 1960s, but, yes, I was around before the dramatic changes from the Vatican II Council made it possible for observant Catholic families, like mine, to eat meat on Fridays. Not just Fridays during Lent, of course, but all those other Fridays. Since my mother was neither a Catholic nor an especially good cook, the restrictions of meatless Fridays meant culinary chaos in her kitchen.

  • Concert Review: The Offspring, Taking Back Sunday, the Used at Buzz Under the Stars

This past Friday night, the intellectuals went to the Beaumont Club, and the people that really wanted to rock were at the City Market. Scott SpychalskiHow many of these kids have actually been to the Steamboat Arabia Museum? 96.5 The Buzz kicked off their Buzz Under the Stars concert series with the Offspring's The Shit Is Fucked Up Tour, with opening support from the kinda-Christian alternative band Anberlin, suburban Chicago punk three-piece Alkaline Trio, the angsty platinum-selling the Us

  • Bo Ling's ranked #2 in the country

The lunch special at Bo Ling's. You may think Bo Ling's is good Chinese food -- but it's apparently really good Chinese food. The Chinese Restaurant News named Bo Ling's second overall in its Sixth Annual Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in the U.S.A., which "recognizes, cultivates, and preserves the best in Chinese cuisine." Bo Ling's was recognized at an award ceremony earlier this month in Las Vegas.

  • This week's "Best of Fat City"

Today is the feast day of St. Vincent Tournante, the patron saint of wine growers and vinegar makers. You might raise a glass of vino in his honor -- he died a ghastly death back the year 304 -- while you read Jonathan Bender's news about wine tastings and classes in Fat City. If you prefer beer to wine, there's this news about Belgian beers. If you've ever been to Brussels, you know that the chocolate desserts served in the little cafes and pastry shops are wonderful, although Kansas
