  • Daily Briefs: Sorry about your testicles, pothead.

In a disturbingly specific instance of anatomical and fiduciary braggadocio, rapper Mase said "I'm young, black and famous / with money hangin' out the anus" in the song "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down." Weird, but truly aspirational for a man like me, who is barely a hundredaire. I, too, would like to have money "hangin' out the anus." Meanwhile, my favorite joke about money is going into a restaurant, snapping a twenty-dollar bill at the hostess, and saying, "Me and my friend Abraham Lincoln were h

  • Olathe teacher sketches the Obamas

Leslie Brown's sketch of Michelle ObamaEarlier this month, former Pitch writer Jen Chen passed along a tip about an Olathe school teacher who does really cool sketches of Michelle Obama. Leslie Brown's first sketch of the First Lady was featured on the Mrs. O blog. And he was considering a second version based off an Annie Leibovitz photo that was featured in Vogue. I exchanged e-mails with Brown after I wrote about his first Michelle Obama drawing. He promised to send his latest sketch when he

  • Eat out while giving back. Forks and Corks tonight

Tonight is the first of Harvesters' Forks & Corks dinners. The biggest is next month, but tonight's proceeds are no less important to Kansas City's only food bank. Eleven restaurants are participating; each offers a special prix-fixe dinner with a portion of the proceeds going directly to Harvesters.Lidia's serves a three-course $35 meal, with diners choosing from three entrees including tenderloin filet with garlic fried potatoes, risotta with balsamic reduction and a seafood soup loaded wi

  • Guilty Pleasures: Lobsterfest at Red Lobster

My friend Franklin has a secret. Franklin's really fussy about fresh seafood, but he has this thing for Red Lobster, though he won't admit that to just everyone. You see, Red Lobster is considered very lowbrow among the foodie set. And that's exactly the reason I like it. Admittedly, I don't eat at Red Lobster restaurants very often because there's almost always a long wait for a table and the joint's typically loaded with screaming kids; I do have my limits. And despite the percep

  • Hey mom I love you!

I do love my mother, though she's a terrible cook. Even she admits it. I became interested in food at a very young age because she actively encouraged my brothers and I to make our own meals so she wouldn't have to. Maybe it was just smart long-term thinking on her part, because now that we're grown up, my brothers and I always prepare a feast for her (and for us, too!) on Mother's Day. This year is no different. It's our tasty little way of saying "We love you mom" because we do.Another way to

  • Is Westport too dangerous for dining?

"Westport's over," said a friend of mine this morning, after hearing about yesterday morning's 7 a.m. robbery at the First Watch restaurant in Westport. (It was reported on the Plog too). "If you can't feel safe eating a pancake at 7 in the morning," said my friend, "where can you feel safe?" I've been hearing rumors of Westport's demise as a dining location for decades, even back in the 1980s, when The Prospect of Westport and Metropolis were two of the most popular venues in the metro. I'

  • NBC Action News smells something fishy

If you didn't catch the local news last night, KSHB really put it to many restaurants in the area who are serving fish that's not what they claim it to be. The station's reporters tested 20 restaurants who serve expensive fish. Of the 20, only three -- The Savoy, Bonefish and Islamorada -- actually served the fish advertised on the menu. Another five or so restaurants served a variation of the species or had legitimate excuses. The Red Snapper did serve snapper to an undercover reporter, just no

  • Eating free on your birthday

Fat City turns one year old next week. Birthdays are always a fun time, and if you play your cards right, they can be a perfect opportunity to get free stuff from restaurants. The blog Rambling Hussies has put together a list of metro-area chains that honor birthday boys and girls. For lunch, you could have a free sandwich from Planet Sub or a free burger from Red Robin. At dinner, Zarda Barbecue will give you free ribs, while The Bristol and its sister Houlihan's both offer free e

  • Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of event listings. In this post, all of our problems are solved. Lobster might be cheap right now, but it always impresses a date. The Bristol's Power & Light District location (51 East 14th Street) has live Maine lobsters for patrons at the bar this Friday. As a happy hour special, $9 lobster is available from 4 to 7 p.m. Not a bad start to the weekend. If you're still in the mood for seafood, wander over to Nara at 9 tonight. Body sushi is

  • Killa City: KCMO homicide No. 76 and 77 and a homicide in Independence

More bloodshed in Kansas City this weekend with two homicides in Kansas City, Missouri. The first homicide victim was an employee at a Cricket Wireless store in the 5100 block of Bristol. The employee -- a white man in his thirties --  was found dead in the backroom of the store on Saturday around 1:43 p.m. A witness told police that a small red truck fled the scene at a high rate of speed. The second victim -- a black man in his thirties -- was shot to death in a home in the 10700 block

  • Killa City: KCMO homicide No. 77, Khamis A. Saed shot and killed at Cricket store

Yesterday, the Kansas City police sent me the names of the city's 84 homicide victims (Taylor Holman's name hadn't been added to the list yet). Going through the list, a couple of names popped out at me -- Khamis A. Saed and Freddie Medina. Saed, 23, was fatally shot while working at the Cricket Wireless phone store at 5116 Bristol on August 15. His body was found in the stores backroom. I can't recall Saed ever being identified as the victim in the shooting.Medina, 16, died on January 5 afte

  • Best Of Extra: More Best Brunches

The Sunday brunch rule: Pick up a plate and try everything One of the standard categories in the annual Best of Kansas City edition of The Pitch is Best Brunch. The combination of breakfast and lunch is an alluring proposition, particularly if it's one of those fabulous all-you-can-eat affairs. Since buffets can be an expensive endeavor for some restaurants, the order-off-the-menu brunch is becoming a more popular option. That's the format at the European-style boite that we chose a

  • Chefs take centerstage

We might not have Miley Cyrus, but Kansas City is going to get a Guy Fieri show. The nickname-labeling, punky-haired host of the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives plays the Midland Theater on December 7. The Guy Fieri Roadshow with Australian flair bartender Hayden Wood (despite what you're thinking this is not The Thunder From Down Under) is described as "food, rock n' roll, and everything they won't let me do on TV."  As to what that entails, you'll have to pay Ticketmaster
