  • Artsy accessories from the museum

Art museum gift shops are almost always awesome. And the tiny store at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art is full of fun wearables, like handmade jewelry and scarves that look as good on the wall as they would on a neck. I was Christmas shopping when I popped into the store recently, and I picked up four wrist cuffs made out of old vinyl records. The cuffs by the Brooklyn-based company Wrecords by Monkey are lightweight and comfortable. The bright, graffiti-like designs are guaranteed to yi

  • A Chateau no mo': Demolition in Historic Northeast leaves neighbors fuming

Bill Broderick, an inspector with the city's Dangerous Buildings division, was driving in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood of northeast Kansas City a week ago when he noticed a vacant building at 308 Brooklyn that people in the neighborhood refer to as "the Chateau." Part of the roof was missing, leaving the building exposed to the elements. The inspector went inside -- he told his supervisors that the structure wasn't secure -- and saw disrepair that, in his opinion, was so egregious that

  • The big dogs of hot dogs

This past Saturday at high noon, as the temperature started to climb into the 80s, a crowd of a hundred or so gathered in a tent on the east side of the Sam's Club parking lot at 135th Street in Overland Park. Here was where dreams were achieved but also shattered as 13 contestants gathered for the Nathan's hot dog regional contest. The winner would move on to the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island on July 4.Emceeing was George Shea. • The Legends - Over and Over MP3s

The Legends' Over and over on Labrador Records is out now in North America and we'll celebrate this by giving away the first song on the album for free. "You Won" is sparkling pop in colossal production with Philip of The Mary Onettes adding deliciously doomy 80s-esque drum sounds to the song's anthemic qualities. Epically lovely! Spin calls "Always the Same" an "early favorite for summertime anthem of 2009," and Brooklyn Vegan says that "Over and Over might be The Legends' best since their fi

  • Free Tee Pee Records Sampler

Tee Pee Records recently updated their online sampler. It now features 19 tracks from pretty much every band on their roster. Nothing from Titan, though--hard to "sample" a track that's something in vicinity of 10-15 minutes long. There is a track from the forthcoming Iron Age full-length, The Sleeping Eye, however. It's called "DIspossessed," and is, as with everything I've ever heard from them, amazing. And, yes, I know that Brooklyn Vegan's had the track since last month. But, this way you c

  • Whiskey & Ice: A relationship on the rocks?

The idea of a summer drink without ice is as perplexing as the wall of drinks at QuikTrip. Vanilla or Cherry flavor shot? What the heck is a Rooster Booster? QT itself has made it clear you're supposed to use ice, offering two kinds for those staggering in from the heat. But there might be one exception to the rule and that, fellow drinkers, is Scotch whiskey. Forget flavor shots -- the dividing line among whiskey enthusiasts is one drawn in water.  Recently the Daily Dust highlighted the I

  • Daytripping: Pome on the Range

Maybe it was the brain freeze that hit me after my second sip of an ice-cold apple cider slushie, but I forgot to ask Mike Gerhardt -- who owns the Pome on the Range Orchards & Winery in Williamsburg, Kansas -- if "Pome" is a play on pomme, the French word for apple. I mean, it was a giant, helium-filled apple, bobbing up in the sky over I-35 South, that caught my eye when I was heading back from a visit to a weird, Children of the Corn kind of small town south of Ottawa. I couldn't get

  • Trouble brewing between laptop users and coffee shop owners

The romantic notion is that the next great novel is being written in a coffee shop. The reality is that coffee shop owners struggle with how to make rent when a customer sets up camp at a table for the better part of the day after purchasing a small cup of coffee. Coffee shops in Brooklyn are pushing back, setting up restrictions on Internet usage and, in some extreme cases, blocking the electrical plugs that laptop users need to keep their batteries from running dry in a few hours. And

After ten years, four full-lengths, a handful of EPs, singles and comp tracks, countless DIY tours and basement shows, and a tireless dedication to an independent punk rock ethic, to boot, Nakatomi Plaza (the best band ever named after a location in Die Hard) has decided to call it a day. And while there are plenty of great ways to say "goodbye" to everyone who supported your band for a decade, two of the very best include releasing one last amazing record and subsequently backing it up with a t
