  • Reporter's Notebook: More from Clinton Adams

In my story this week, Housing for Dummies, I wrote about the city's housing department, or lack thereof. In the story, I quoted Kansas City lawyer and Urban Summit attendee Clinton Adams as he faulted Sharon Sanders Brooks' leadership on the housing committee. Space didn't permit the inclusion of all that Adams had to say on the subject of faulty leadership, which included criticism of more than just Sanders Brooks. On City Manager Wayne Cauthen: "Some of us with the Urban Summit are extreme

  • Sharon Sanders Brooks will not be bothered with your silly questions.

The Kansas City Star is running "breaking news" about Councilwoman Cindy Circo's deposition on its Web site. DeAnn Smith reports what, to some City Hall watchers, will come as old news: Circo thinks Mayor Mark Funkhouser was punishing her for her vote on the volunteer ordinance when he took away her role as chair of the city's Housing Committee. Funkhouser then awarded the chair to Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks, who was the only councilperson absent from the September 25, 2008, meeting in w

  • Blue Hills housing gets national green award

Two years ago, the lots lining Olive Street were vacant and scattered with garbage. That was before Blue Hill Community Services stepped in and replaced the urban wasteland with new, eco-friendly housing. The effort was enough to earn the group a trip to Washington, D.C., later this month, courtesy of the Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Russ Johnson shows off his hot legs (and mandals), pedals 13 miles to downtown

Russ JohnsonI knew today was going to be a great day when I saw City Councilman Russ "Hot Legs" Johnson wearing bike shorts and mandals on the morning news ... and I knew I had to get a photo. To kickoff Bike Week, Johnson pedaled the 13 miles from his 2nd District home to the Power & Light District. Thirteen miles is quite a haul to downtown, and I figured  Johnson was probably a little sweaty from the ride, so I asked him if there was a shower at City Hall for him to clean up. Nop

  • Still no money for Citadel Plaza

For the Citadel Plaza development, it appears the Wednesday night curveball is now par for the course. Last week, the day before the Kansas City City Council was set to hand over $20.5 million in taxpayer dollars to the developers of a proposed $90-million shopping center at 63rd Street and Prospect Avenue, city finance director Jeffrey Yates recommended the city raid the capital improvements pot to find the cash. That didn't go over well. This week, another idea surfaced from the finance d

  • How's that $500,000 convention hotel study going?

Those of you wondering what's up with the $500,000 convention hotel study will be happy to know it's just getting started, and Prime Buzz says Councilwoman Cindy Circo and businessman Bill George are co-chairing the committee studying whether to build the hotel. The group already agrees that the city needs a convention hotel to compete for the biggest and bestest conventions out there, but Circo says they need to study the risk. "We don't want to do this at any cost," Circo said.Oh, well we've a

  • Regulated Industries explains its 3 a.m. reform

Last week, we reported on the proposed city ordinance change that could revoke your favorite bar's 3 a.m. liquor license. The changes include raising the gross annual sales requirement from $100,000 to $250,000. Jim Hess, co-owner of Dave's Stagecoach in Westport, said the changes would cost jobs and money. Some of commentors were upset that the changes included an exemption for bars in downtown entertainment districts (i.e., Power & Light)  Since then, we've been

The proposal that's brought back will then be examined by a third party to determine the size of the crater it will make in the city budget. A "convention headquarters" hotel will require substantial taxpayer assistance if it's to be built.Councilwoman
