  • Tonight at the Czar Bar: Fall Fashion Show

By JEN CHEN and NADIA PFLAUM Tonight's Fall Fashion Show, presented by Heather Rama's Castoffs line and Scarlett Garnet Jewelry is a benefit for Hope House. Just as important: Tony at the Czar Bar, 1531 Grand, makes a mean Mai Tai. The show is sponsored by The Pitch and starts at 8:30 p.m., with a very reasonable $5 suggested donation at the door. As for the dress pictured, Heather tells us that she tailored it, shortened it and sewed on a vintage pink millinery flower. It's 90 bucks and "pe

  • Last night's fashion show...Czar Bar

By NADIA PFLAUM The Czar Bar's walkway became a runway last night. Perilous stuff for cocktail waitresses and people trying to get to the bathroom, but entertaining for everyone else. Click the image to view the slide show.

  • Concert Review: Roman Numerals, the Monitor and Radio City, 1/09/09 at the Record Bar

I admit that I expected big things on Friday night. I purposely skipped out on the Roman Numerals show at Czar Bar a week before. I feel claustrophobic in there when bands are playing, especially those with large local draws. I knew that I could better judge the performance of a band in a venue with lower ceilings and a larger stage. The Record Bar seems to be more inviting and accommodating to non-locals. Drinks are cheaper there, too. First up was Radio City, a semi-radio-ready four piece w

Are we human or are we ... awesome? The Pitch and 96.5 FM The Buzz present the Killers ... at the Czar Bar! Tomorrow night! $3,500 or 5,000 cans of food. Hurry -- only 25 people allowed! Just kidding. Instead, mark your calendar for May 2, 2009; that's really when singer/keyboardist/Chiefs-cornerback-namesake Brandon Flowers and his Las Vegas pop-rock pals come to Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone. Tickets go onsale January 24 at 10 a.m. You're welcome.

  • Wayward Q&A: Crackin' Nuts with Duane Trower

Duane Trower is a busy dude. Usually found behind the soundboards of the Record Bar, the Brick or Czar Bar, Duane has also played with some of KC's most acclaimed bands (Season to Risk, Overstep, Doris Henson) and recorded, mixed or mastered even more of them (The Beautiful Bodies, Olympic Size, the Grand Marquis), often at Westend Recording Studios. We caught up with Duane via e-mail to get this sound dude to sound off. The Pitch: What are your KC roots? Trower: I was born in western Kansa

  • New Gaslights MP3: "California"

It's been a quiet winter, concert-wise, for the Gaslights -- which is to be expected as frontwoman Abigail Henderson continues her cancer treatments. But ray of sunshine has broken through da haze: The band has just announced a new album due out this summer, and you can download the first single, "California," for free below or at thegaslights.com. I think we could all use a taste of the Golden State right about now. Catch the Gaslights live this Saturday, April 4, at the Czar Bar, with Expass

A number of things plopped into my inbox, across my RSS reader and into and out of my pants today, so I thought I'd share with a quick little mixed-bag post here at the end of another day in Pitch-land. Bill Brownlee is jazz hero man of the day. Not only did the local blogger write this killer review of the People's Liberation Big Band's Battleship Potemkin project, he also debuted a jazz events calendar that's an offshoot of his jazz blog Plastic Sax. We don't have a review of Cake's sold-out

There are very, very few local bands that give me goosebumps the way American Catastrophe does. SLIMMphoto Terrence Moore, the soft-spoken AmCat guitarist, backup singer and harmonica and banjo player, is also starting to pick up more solo gigs. I caught up with Moore, who is also a manager at the Apple Store on the Plaza, in front of YJ's in the Crossroads. We discussed technology, urban revitalization and Moore's solo goals. Though still an underdog in its hometown (how often does that happen?), Kansas City bilingual rockers Making Movies netted 16,000 views in one week after its video for "Libertad" debuted on MySpace Latino on May 1, making it the third most watched video on the site. The band has also toured with Grammy-winning Columbian rockers Aterciopelados. Without further ado... • Tonight: Free Scion Party featuring Klever, Kill the Noise and other badass DJs

Scion is currently rolling all over second-city (and third and fourth) scenes. Locally, the car company has already set up its semi-secret beat laboratory. In addition, the keyed-in car co. is sending a pack of electro emissaries around to towns like Boston, Minneapolis, Cincinatti and KC. Starting at 9 p.m., the Czar Bar is hosting the Scion Metro Tour, which brings a subtly diverse lineup, including headliner Klever from Atlanta, New York techno jammer(s?) North Kansas City rapper D/Will dropped his first album, Battery Effect, yesterday. It's available now for free download through 2DopeBoyz, a division of OkayPlayer (the Roots' label). Our reviewer speaks of D/Will's "considerable microphone skills and authenticity," which is a damned good endorsement. Get that sucker via this page, which offers up the link. Can't wait for the music showcase on August 6? Neither can we, and that's why we're throwing a little pre-party tonight that'll give everyone a small but potent taste of the eclectic awesomeness that is the Pitch Music Awards (and, by extension, our town's music scene). Actually, I'm not sure whether this party was planned by our savvy marketing people or the folks at Czar Bar -- but either way, I'm grateful to both parties that it's happening, because it's basically turning CZBZ's (get it? lik

John Hulston has a lot on his plate these days. Aloha, Hulston. I caught up with the owner of Anodyne Records and co-owner of Czar Bar via Facebook and talked about what's cookin' in the Crossroads. The Pitch:Which is more difficult, being a bar owner or running a record label? John Hulston: Owning a bar for sure. I'm dealing with a much higher volume of sales and much more day-to-day, minute-to-minute attention is required. What does Czar Bar offer that other venues don't? An unpara

  • Wayward Exclusive: Download the Making Movies/Minimal split EP free

Ready for something completely nuevo? 'Cause I doubt you've heard anything like Minimal. The Spanish-singing Miami band fuses acoustic guitars, electronic sounds and massive drum escapades into charging, near-epic brews that call to mind bands like Gomez and Muse. Check out the videos for the intricate but hefty "El Cubo" and the riff-slugging "No Sonar." and see if you aren't impressed. Minimal's name, it seems, is quite misleading. Because, evidently, the citizens of Kansas City have been g

Tonight at Czar Bar, the fashionists of Monkey Wrench Clothing take over the runway, and a quirky but very intriguing musical lineup takes over the PA. First up, Adam Lee and the Dead Horse Sound Company -- a local honky tonk duo about whom we have had no shortage of good things to say -- gets the heartache locomotive chuggin' at 9 p.m. Then, around 10, the Chicago band Skybox goes on. Domino Records calls Max Tundra's music "cosmic glitch-pop R&B," which is as good a name as any for the refreshing way he blends '80s pop, dance grooves, glitchy bitcore, and funk. The man born Ben Jacobs knows how to rock a beat, and the Czar Bar's just intimate enough to make it feel like you and every person dancing next to you are getting your very own personal concert. If you like Chromeo, this is your new shit. Deastro (pronounced just like the GI Joe villain -- the spelling chan

I had a lot of fun this weekend because of Bill Sundahl. I arrived at Crosstown Station in the middle of the Doo-Dads song, "Dinosaur Party." There were about ten kids jumping up and down, bouncing red balls and running back and forth on the dance floor.
