  • I'm the DJ, He's the Rapper: An interview with DJ Jazzy Jeff

In the late '80s and early '90s, the smack-talkin', party-startin' Philadelphia duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince provided millions of young American suburbanites their first introduction to the joys of hip-hop. credit: nathalie@gunpowder-3.tv With multi-platinum-selling status and unforgettable songs like "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble," "Parents Just Don't Understand" (which won the first-ever rap Grammy), "Nightmare On My Street" (which, full disclosure, I memorized and performed in a

  • DJ Jazzy Jeff says he was booted off stage at Power & Light for playing hip hop

credit: nathalie@gunpowder-3.tvDJ Jazzy JeffDJ Jazzy Jeff was supposed to play a free show at the Power & Light District Saturday night, but after a half hour of playing clean, radio edits of popular hip hop songs (we're told) the folks running P&L shut him down and sent him packing. Here's what DJ Jazzy Jeff has been saying about it on his Twitter feed: HOW DID THEY KICK ME OFF STAGE IN KANSAS CITY FOR PLAYIN HIP HOP...I'M A 25YR LEGEND...THIS IS SOME BULLSHIT19 minutes ago from web

  • Skillz also says Cordish kicked DJ Jazzy Jeff out for playing top 40 hip hop

Here's a video shot after DJ Jazzy Jeff's set was cut short in the Power & Light District Saturday night. Skillz claims Cordish cut off DJ Jazzy Jeff set because he played top 40 hip hop. Cordish claims that DJ Jazzy Jeff's set was shut down because they feared he'd blow the system.

  • More throw in on DJ Jazzy Jeff allegedly getting thrown out of Power & Light

As my colleague Justin Kendall reported early this morning on the Plog, DJ Jazzy Jeff had his set cut short last night at Power and Light for, I was told by witnesses, "playing hip-hop." I was at the show, but at the moment Jazzy and his MC, Skillz, allegedly got escorted out, I was inside of Raglan freakin' Road, buying a drink. Gah! The crowd was not rowdy at all. It was the most diverse crowd I've seen at P&L, and everyone seemed to be enjoying Jazzy's jams. I don't know what happened. Afterw

  • Cordish explains why DJ Jazzy Jeff's set was cut short.

Backlash continues to rise surrounding DJ Jazzy Jeff's sudden dismissal in the middle of his DJ set last night at Power & Light. Barely 12 hours out, and it's all over the blogosphere. Lots of people, including prominent local hip-hop scenesters, feel that it was clear-cut case of P&L's bias against hip-hop music and those who follow it (by extension: black people).According to Cordish, Jazzy's sound levels would have laid ruin to the P&L's sound system. To get the establishment's side of the s

  • Cordish's side of the Jazzy Jeff debacle

Earlier today, I spoke with Kansas City Power & Light District President Jon D. Stephens about why DJ Jazzy Jeff was asked to leave in the middle of his set last night in the district. Read his explanation on the Plog.

Ripped jeans. Gold chains. Oversized T-shirts. These represent a small portion of the list of banned items at Kansas City's Power and Light District. After Saturday night's free concert featuring Z-Trip, DJ Jazzy Jeff and MSTRKRFT, many in Kansas City are wondering if hip-hop might be added to the list. • P&L press release claims DJ Jazzy Jeff's set damaged system but they want to bring him back to KC

Local PR firm Sturges Word sent out the press release below. Power & Light District president Jon Stephens is listed as the media contact. (Updated) The release says DJ Jazzy Jeff's set damaged the sound system at KC Live. Pitch reporter Nadia Pflaum asked Stephens if insurance would cover the damage. Here's what Stephens wrote:We are replacing and not charging Jazzy Jeff.  At this point we do not feel that warranties or insurance will cover but we are paying to repair the system. And he

  • Fader TV posts video from DJ Jazzy Jeff's P&L performance. Z-Trip claims they were told not to play any rap music

This four-minute video was shot by Fader TV in Kansas City at the Power & Light District the night of DJ Jazzy Jeff's now infamous performance. I can't make out what Jazzy Jeff's MC, Skillz, is saying on stage in the video, but backstage Z-Trip says he was told not to play any hip-hop music (a claim Cordish has rebutted and later claimed Jazzy Jeff's set damaged the sound system). See for yourself.

Yes the Grandmaster Flash. The first man ever to use the turntable as an instrument was kind enough to call our headquarters last week to field questions about his life, from the first record he ever cut to what's hot on the dance floor now to his starring role in the new game DJ Hero. Without the pioneering discoveries Flash (born in Barbados as Joseph Saddler and brought up in the Bronx) made in the early '70s experimenting with vinyl records, hip-hop as we know it today would not exist. • City's civil rights manager can't tell whether Jazzy Jeff or P&L workers are telling the truth

Scott SpychalskiDJ Jazzy JeffWe didn't learn a lot from the report by Kansas City's Human Relations Division on the tiff between DJ Jazzy Jeff and the folks running the Power & Light District. Civil Rights Manager Mickey Dean couldn't decipher who was telling the truth -- Jazzy Jeff, who claimed he was booted for playing hip hop and rap, or P&L's management, who claimed Jazzy Jeff was about to blow the P&L's sound system during his June 6 concert. Wait, we have a civil rights mana

Halloween is my favorite time of year. I spend ages obsessing over costumes, Halloween Spirit makes its appearance, and I get to hit up every store in town for spooky Halloween decorations (or, as we refer to them in our household, "decorations"). The best part of this holiday for me, however, is the music. I have scads of music that relates to Halloween, and for the past few years, I used my radio program, Sunglasses After Dark, to showcase it. Well, that ended when I graduated, so I was at a

  • New Steddy P. video: "No Matter How"

Man, the hip-hop scene is putting all other camps of local music TO SHAME these days as far as videos (and, by extension, actually enjoyable online self-promotion) goes. Peep Steddy's P's new one, "No Matter How," from his Style Like Mind album. We gave the album a not at all bad review a couple weeks ago, but it wasn't good enough for commenter Kevin from Colorado Springs, who called it the "most disorientating, unfocused, ignorant display of writing" he's "EVER" seen. And then he went on to g
