  • Stealing Time: Fred Phelps thinks Santa Claus molests children

Fred Phelps is spreading joy to all the boys and girls of Washington state with a special holiday message: "Santa Claus will take you to hell." Phelps, pastor of Topeka's least popular church, wants his Christmas cheer included in Washington's state capitol next to a nativity scene and an atheist sign. But Phelps' message wouldn't be complete unless he slandered Santa Claus as a child molester and blames the deaths of American soldiers on the jolly old elf. Westboro's members aren't the only loc

  • Stealing Time: Forecasting Funkhouser's status

State of the Line introduces the "Funkhouser Adjective Alert System," giving us a color-coded warning system of the mayor's status. "So right now we're somewhere between 'beleaguered' and 'embattled,' " State of the Line forecasts. "Let's just hope we don't reach the last two on the list." Now if we could just get some Gloria Squitiro warnings. Squit Beacon red, racist comments ahead. Squit Beacon white, bathroom rendezvous in sight. Squit Beacon blue, Joe Miller's tears flow anew.

  • Royals sign yet another asshole

Welcome to KC, Sidney! The Royals have invited journeyman right-hander Sidney Ponson to camp, adding another colossal jerk to the list of players Dayton Moore has worked to acquire.Moore cultivates a squeaky-clean image. Last year, he and manager Trey Hillman talked about their faith at a special chapel at the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. When he arrived in town, Moore promised Joe Posnanski that he would stock the clubhouse with guys who helped little old ladies with their groceries.

  • One Kauffman Stadium tenant confirmed: Sheridan's Frozen Custard

Flickr: Duluoz CatsSheridan's Frozen Custard has been available at Kauffman Stadium for a couple of years, but only from concession carts with custard made off-site. Now, the redesigned stadium will feature a 600 square foot store that, according to a Royals' press release, will be "the only frozen custard store to operate in a professional sports venue in the country."I talked to founder Jim Sheridan who said the new store, which was designed by 360 Architects, would be featured in the Outfield

  • Whitlock: Juice up the Royals with Barry Bonds

Photo illustration by Kym GriswoldBarry BondsSweet baby Jesus, we agree with Grimace-shaped Jason Whitlock. Yesterday, the Kansas City Star columnist wrote that it was time for the Royals to sign Barry Bonds. Well, it's beyond time to sign the jacked up 44-year-old slugger. Back in December 2006, we begged the Royals to inject some life into their pitiful lineup by trading for Bonds. Alas, general manager Dayton Moore doesn't sound too interested in the former San Francisco slugger. Moore told W

  • Royals' Ponson tests positive for stimulant; busted for trying to shed 'hefty' label

Remember when Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore talked about bringing character guys into his clubhouse? The Associated Press reports that pitcher Sidney Ponson tested positive for Phentermine, a stimulant and an appetite suppressant, at the World Baseball Classic. Now, Ponson's been banned from international competition for two years. As my colleague David Martin wrote in March: Ponson is synonymous with the word "incident" (as well as "hefty"). He was charged with punching a judg

  • Spat between Royals blogger and organization ends with whimper

Hot topic among Royals fans this weekend was the "ban" levied by the club against Rany Jazayerli, who pens Rany on the Royals and also hosts a Royals heavy radio show on WHB 810. Jazayerli went into the Royals doghouse for a column calling for the head of trainer Nick Swartz. A never ending string of injuries led Jazayerli to the conclusion. The team wasn't happy, and Jazayerli claimed they "banned" him. "Let's just say you won't hear anyone from the front office on my radio show anytime soon,"

  • Is Horacio Ramirez the reason health care can't get fixed?

There's a parallel between the health care debate and the Royals, and it has nothing to do with boos and hisses.James Surowiecki, who writes about business and finance at The New Yorker, posits that resistance to the Democrats' ideas for reforming health care has a psychological component. The skittishness, Surowiecki explains, is partly a reflection of biases that make people resistance to change."Most of us, for instance, are prey to the so-called 'endowment effect': the mere fact that you

  • Star: Royals extend contract of G.M. Moore

Dayton MooreDayton Moore will be cashing more of those sweet, sweet Wal-Mart checks from David Glass. The Kansas City Star reports that Glass has rewarded Moore, the Royals' general manager, with a four-year extension. The Star tries to polish a turd: Moore became the club's general manager on May 30, 2006. The club's record improved in his first two full seasons before this year's slide. The Royals lost 93 games in his first full season with the club, 87 the next year and 80 so far this ye
