  • Concert Review: Junior Boys and Max Tundra at the Record Bar

REVIEW AND PHOTOS BY LAUREN LOYA Junior Boys: music for grown-up dancing Labelmates Junior Boys and Max Tundra don't look like guys who inspire kinetic sensuality, but that's what they got when they set up shop at the Record Bar Friday night. The jam-packed crowd bopped first to Tundra's bright, erratic sounds -- warm, melodic rays of sunshine one second, cheerful electronic noise the next. Tundra bounced like a spastic chimp from the mic to a variety of music equipment. The results were refr

  • Incoming: Peter Bjorn & John at the Granada, August 28

Whistling Swedish indie poppers Peter Bjorn & John are coming to Lawrence on August 28. It's an off-date from their tour with Depeche Mode, so we don't get graced with Dave Gahan or some super-amazing duet on "Enjoy the Silence." Johan Bergmark PB&J's newest album, Living Thing, didn't get nearly the acclaim given Writer's Block, but it's still a pretty solid release.

KJHK can be found on your radio dial at 90.7FM, and Sonic Spectrum airs Saturd

  • KISS and the Demise of the Small Town Record Store

Last week, KISS announced that its new album, Sonic Boom, is to be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart. Is this further evidence of what the Chicago Tribune's Mark Caro referred to as "the death of the record store"? Caro also asked if a rock band selling an album exclusively at a big box store counted as a sell-out. I think it's a valid question. The Tribune's Greg Kott and compatriot critic Jim Derogatis on the Sun-Times have discussed this sort of thing time and time again on their program S

  • Sonic Spectrum Thursdays at the Sidecar

DJ Robert Moore hosts Sonic Spectrum Thursdays at The Sidecar in Westport. The Sidecar is the new bar right next to the Beaumont. Moore says that he "will be spinning a healthy and eclectic mix," and that "[l]ast week's debut was a great success. I hope y'all will drop in sometime." So, y'know...do the man a favor and drop in, y'all. Moore plays everything on his Saturday night show on the Buzz: Depeche Mode, Prince Buster, Joan Jett, and Public Enemy are all equally likely to pop up. Yo

  • MP3: Relation, "Here Comes Your Man"

Usually, I am not a fan of "dance music," especially the sort that comes with a pedigree that mentions London's Southend. Everything dance these days seems to be reaching back to Depeche Mode or some other '80s electronic act, and not doing it nearly as well, thus inviting unfavorable comparisons. Relation's debut album, Fear of Night, does nothing to endear itself to me, and invites all of those unfavorable comparisons. You can listen to the whole thing at Urban Torque's site. However,
