  • Two restaurants awarded best burger by Food Network Magazine

When Food Network Magazine launched late last year I stopped by a grocery store to read it (yes, I'm that guy) and didn't notice any articles about KC. So I figured I'd check out the next issue. I waited and I waited and after two months, the same inaugural issue was still listed on the Web site and at the grocery store. What the hell? Did it fold after one issue? I was curious enough to jot down the magazine's e-mail address and try to understand what was going on.The answer is no, the Food Net

  • More accolades for Broadmoor Bistro

I've already touted the wonderful high school culinary program at Broadmoor Bistro (as did Star Magazine this weekend). The students there continue to win award after award. Sammy Jo Claussen beat out 33 competitors from across the nation to win "Best Teen Chef 2009" as sponsored by the International Culinary School at the Art Institutes International in Charlotte, NC. In addition, Kaitlyn McKissick of Olathe North High School's culinary program placed second at the Charlotte competition. The hig

  • Function Junction is cooking up big plans

Last winter, I was a guest on a radio show with Mary Merola, the founder of the Function Junction store in Kansas City -- she's the lady on the right in the photo -- and a terrific sport. I teased her, unmercifully, on the air about whether it was considered good manners to bring a cheese ball (the appetizer, not a weird date -- although I have brought both) as a "hostess gift" to a holiday party. I could tell by Mary's expression that one would never dare bring a cheese ball -- dairy or hu

  • Coolio resurfaces in the kitchen

Celebrities can't resist writing children's books, so it would only make sense that a rapper would release a new cookbook. On Friday, the Chicago Tribune's The Stew flipped through Cookin' With Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a 1-Star Price -- a new cookbook set to drop be released in November by Simon & Schuster. In advance of the book, Coolio (born Artis Leon Ivey, Jr.) has been recording a Web cooking show of the same name, knocking out dishes like Tricked Out Westside Tilapia, Swashbucklin' Shri

  • Cakes you can wear or shirts you can eat

Betty Crocker is about to get served. The next generation of cake competitions has arrived with the Threadcakes online cake competition. The second iteration of the competition asks bakers to transform T-shirt graphics into eye-opening cakes.   The contest is sponsored by Threadless -- a T-shirt company that lets consumers vote on which graphics entered (via an open submission process) should be printed on shirts. It's the T-shirt designer equivalent of getting a slot on open mic night, if

  • What's in season: Peppers

Vegetables can be a matter of perspective. On the original Iron Chef, not the Alton-Brown-narrated Iron Chef America, fish heads received the biggest accolades from the Japanese judges when it was revealed that they were a secret ingredient. The ingredient they were least excited about? Bell peppers. The lesson here is that you better learn like to peppers because you could be eating fish heads instead.Bell peppers come in a wide variety of colors -- green, red, yellow, orange, purple, brown
