  • Al Latta will not be allowed to serenade America

Damn, of all the weekends to muzzle Kansas City's most enigmatic crooner, why does it have to be the Fourth of July? According to this story, Latta's home base, the Cigar Box, has its liquor license suspended for two days due to violating city ordinances, selling booze to minors among them. The suspension starts at 6 a.m. July 4th, and ends at midnight, July 5. Too bad Latta and the Box won't get their hands on a little of that sweet holiday drinking money, but at least this way maybe he'll

  • What to do this weekend -- our suggestions

Celebrate America. Duh -- it's Fourth of July weekend. But seriously, Worlds of Fun is having a Celebrate America Festival every Friday and Saturday in July. Since you're probably not working today, you should just go now. As a reward for surviving the Orient Express, there will be fireworks in the evening. If you want to wait until Saturday to get your Independence Day on, head to the Crossroads. Due to the holiday, some galleries are waiting until next weekend to hold their monthly openings. Bu

  • Flier of the Week: Fourth of July at the Replay on the Fourth of July

Fourth of July plays the Replay on the Fourth of July. Wow, if that's not meta, I don't know what is. Anyhow, we're attempting to showcase a flier every week we think goes above and beyond the usual clip art / movie still means of show promotion, and creates something that might actually be construed as "art." As far as inaugural pieces go, this one's a corker. If you have a flier you'd like to submit, drop me a line.

  • Concert Review: Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd at Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone

I don't have a gun, a trucker hat or any cutoff denim clothing. I refuse to drink PBR, I drive a Japanese car and honestly, motorcycles kind of freak me out. Despite all of this, I thought that to turn down tickets to see Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd on the Fourth of July would be decidedly unpatriotic. Sandstone was packed... A veritable sea of white folks. I remember reading that a pack of four lawn tickets could be purchased for $100. It was true recession relief. Kid Rock would later thank

  • KCK's Schlitterbahn waterpark may actually open before summer ends

Last we heard, KCK's Schlitterbahn Vacation Village Waterpark was hiring. Now, the lucky hires may actually get to collect paychecks; the waterpark might open next week (although there's no official opening date, yet). KMBC Channel 9 reports that the first phase of construction at the waterpark is finished and the park will open with 13 attractions. Here's the list of water slides, rollercoasters and more. The Schlitterblog shows photos of "Torrent River" getting filled with water on the Fourth

  • Mighty Mighty Bosstones Enter the Studio For New Album

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones entered the studio on the Fourth of July to begin recording their first album of all-new material since 2002's A Jackknife to a Swan. They've been posting regular Twitter updates, including a master list of all the songs they're working on. Nine of those songs have been culled from the 25 listed, leaving 16 remaining. No idea as to which ones made the cut. Since the band reunited in late 2007, they've released the b-sides collection Medium Rare and a 7" single with

  • Concert Review: Toby Keith at Sprint Center

Because he's a ka-jillionaire whose product is mostly shoveled by Wal-Mart and is therefore in no position to sell out anyway, I don't know why it surprised me that Toby Keith, that big ol' hunk of American angus, opened his Friday-night Sprint Center show with a seven-minute Ford commercial. Camille Brecht Or that hearty Ford logos bedecked his tailgate-themed stage set. Or that this stirred reverential whoops from the breasts of an audience more like constituents than mere fans. "S

  • Los Cabos opens in Mission Farms

Los Cabos -- the twelfth restaurant from KC Hopps -- opened last Monday in Mission Farms. Today it debuts a new menu with several additional seafood and vegetarian items.  "We look at every concept and decide if it's something we can do well," says Chris Sutton, CEO of KC Hopps. "In this case, we felt like we had the talent to put our mark on the location in Mission Farms." The restaurant at 10551 Mission Road seats 268 people with two private dining rooms available -- and what Sutton be
