  • The Download: New Hush Now MP3s

It's not surprising when self-proclaimed shoegazers list My Bloody Valentine as an influence, but it's hard not to raise an eyebrow when Hall & Oates gets tossed into the same mix. Boston's Hush Now issued its self-titled debut last October, but has recently decided to give it away for free. From the band's MySpace page: "So, what do a van, a priest, and Queen have in common? They all added up to one momentous night that lead to the birth of The Hush Now. It was a dark and stormy night in Lo

  • Tonight: We Built this Tigercity at the Brick (Now with MP3!)

In lieu of having its own Hall & Oates and Wang Chung-inspired band, Kansas City seems to have adopted Tigercity as one of its native sons. The Brooklyn band draws a dedicated crowd of KC kids who dress up to get down to the band's smooth, yacht-humpin', ultra-sexy, falsetto funk. There's really no equal around today (maybe Chromeo or MGMT) when it comes to updating the feathery vibes laid down by the Doobie Brothers, Prince, and Roxy Music. But Tigercity is no mere novelty act - their songs are

  • Tonight: "Summer Breeze" Yacht Rock Tribute at the Record Bar

Between the years 2005 and 2008, the masterful, low-budget viral video series Yacht Rock, made by a bunch of 20-something dudes out in California, had music geeks glued to their Channel 101 bookmark hoping for a new episode like farmers praying for rain for their thirsty crops. Beginning with episode 1 -- in which the collaboration between Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald that birthed "What a Fool Believes" is parodized and the term "yacht rock" is defined by host "Hollywood" Steve Huey as the

  • New releases, Tuesday, October 13

Really -- does anyone need a four-disc Hall & Oates box set? Evidently, as Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall & John Oates sees release today. It has live performances, 16 unreleased tracks, all the hits, and a book with track-by-track breakdowns from the duo. For a box set, it's actually pretty decently priced, although if you're like most people, there is really no need whatsoever for that much Hall & Oates. A greatest hits will do just fine. Bob Dylan release

  • Every Halloween Show Your Little Heart Desires

In what we hope is the master list for your Halloween shenanigans, there's a lot to get through. For one thing, since the holiday falls on a Saturday, some folks are getting it started a little early Friday night. For instance, Fourth of July is at the Eighth Street Taproom (801 New Hampshire in Lawrence) Friday night with Sultan Sea. As you can see from the flier (by Pre Sense Form and Zaguar Collages, featuring the sexy Brendan Hangauer from last year's Halloween), costumes are not onl

This video is not for fans of Family Guy, American Dad, or the Cleveland Show. This short from CollegeHumor pretty much sums up the output of Seth MacFarlane over the past decade: See more funny videos and funny pictures at CollegeHumor. That said, as scattershot as the man's approach is, he's bound to hit every once in a while. Such is the case of Hall & Oates in a scene from this weekend's episode. And now you've seen the good part and can go back to watching Time Warp episodes on DVD, whic
