  • Kansas defends USA from Brits. Wins Pancake Race!

While you were out partying on Fat Tuesday, the town of Liberal, Kansas, was busy preparing pancakes and training for its race against arch nemesis Olney, England. Think Frasier versus Ali, Rocky versus Apollo, Rocky versus Drago uh... Rocky versus anyone. Fortunately, this time the good guys won and Kansas whipped England's ass. We have Wichita State student Tasha Gallegos to thank for the win. She finished the 380 meter course in a blistering 57.5 seconds all the while holding a skillet with a

  • Overland Park wins student cooking competition

Clearing out my press-release inbox for the week, I noticed I missed this important announcement from the National Restaurant Association. (The good NRA.) It has chosen the Overland Park Convention Center for its 2010 and 2011 national competition. The 2009 competition is in San Diego. The Association's ProStart invitational for high school students involves a culinary event in which they'll prepare a meal consisting of a starter, an entrée and dessert in 60 minutes. There is also a management c

  • Drinking games: Everything old is new again

Flickr: Hotdirt21Call me and old fogie, but when I was in high school and of prime beer-game age, we didn't play a ton of Beirut. (I've never figured out why anyone called beer pong Beirut, but in high school you don't ask questions.) Now, apparently kids play so much of it that people are forced to make lists like a dozen popular drinking games not named beer pong. The list reads like a hazy walk down memory lane.My rebel friends and I didn't play because not a lot of people had ping-pong

  • KC's dropout rate: First, the good news

Last June, the Kansas City, Missouri, School District had to report a dismal 42 percent dropout rate to Missouri's Department of Education. This year, District officials plan to report a dropout rate of 10 to 12 percent -- a huge improvement for the 2008-2009 school year. That's the good news. The bad news is, these numbers might not have anything to do with more kids staying in school. Students who transfer to other districts aren't considered dropouts, and previously, the district could merely

I've already touted the wonderful high school culinary program at Broadmoor Bistro (as did Star Magazine this weekend). The students there continue to win award after award. In addition, Kaitlyn McKissick of Olathe North High School's culinary program placed second at the Charlotte competition. The hig

  • Lincoln Prep named one of Newsweek's top schools in the nation

According to a Newsweek "Web Exclusive," the magazine has ranked Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, in the Kansas City, Missouri, School District, 128th out of 1,500 public high schools in the nation.  This is just the latest drop in a well-deserved shower of praise for Lincoln Prep. Six months ago U.S. News and World Report handed its Silver Medal ranking to the school for the second time in two years, according to Andre Riley, communications specialist for the district. Both rankings ar

  • This church will help you make a first down

This isn't the first time this publication has praised Calvary Temple Baptist. Back when most churches refused to speak about HIV/AIDS victims, the church and its pastor Eric Williams were reaching out to the community to increase awareness. As this May 2008 feature, "A Change is Gonna Come," recounted, they've got a lot more help today. Now they're dealing with other health concerns in African-American community, and helping inner city football teams kick ass. Last October, the church open
