  • NY Islanders landlocked in KC? Not so fast

Kansas City and AEG are working on getting a pro basketball or hockey team for the Sprint Center. That's what City Manager Wayne Cauthen told The Downtowners lunch club yesterday. He specifically mentioned the New York Islanders. I saved this shaky video from yesterday's dispatch.  Since the announcement that the Islanders booked an exhibition game at the Sprint Center, there's been a lot of talk about the team getting landlocked in Kansas City. A lot of people saw the exhibition game a

  • Enough with the New York Islanders to KC talk

We're going to be hearing about the New York Islanders' possible move to Kansas City until at least September. That's when New York will play an exhibition game at the Sprint Center. Until then, we'll be reading news stories like the one in yesterday's Kansas City Star or today's Long Island Business News. But the stories contradict each other. The Star says the Islanders have an out. The Business News story calls the contract "iron clad." I'm pretty tired of all of the speculation, especially k

  • KC's NHL 21 watching Phoenix Coyotoes

I was a little puzzled when I found this fax from NHL 21 on the machine this afternoon."NHL 21 is keenly aware of the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy situation. We stand ready, willing and able to assist at the appropriate time with the future search for ownership of an NHL club member in Kansas City at Sprint Center, when so deemed appropriate by the NHL Board of Governors. Currently NHL 21 is focused on the LA Kings vs New York Islanders game at Sprint Center September 22 this coming fall," said Pa

  • Report: KC's elite hot for some NHL action

As the Sprint Center gradually loses its new arena smell, the odds of Kansas City landing an NHL or NBA team seem more remote. But one booster is making sure that KC at least looks poised to snatch up the next hockey team willing to relocate.A weekly newspaper in Columbus, Ohio, The Other Paper, ran a story earlier this month suggesting that Kansas City was "the dame at the end of the bar ... making eyes at" the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. Delighted with the metaphor, the writer of the sto

  • Chances 'slim' of New York Islanders moving to KC, Newsday says

Great tickets are still available for the September preseason game between the New York Islanders and the Los Angeles Kings. That's what Newsday columnist Jim Baumbach wrote a couple of days ago.Want two seats 11 rows back just off center ice? They could be yours for just $75 a pop, plus a $9.65 convenience charge and $1 building facility charge, of course. (Sorry, the $150 tickets appear to be sold out.) Good deal that the most expensive tickets are gone. Bad deal that lower bowl tix are s

  • New York Islanders sign 99-year lease, then threaten to move

AEG president TIm Leiweke was right to downplay the rumors that the New York Islanders might get landlocked in Kansas City's Sprint Center. Not just because the Islanders weren't likely to skate into the Sprint Center. But maybe because Islanders owner Charles Wang is a little too unpredictable for Leiweke's taste (not to mention Wang's franchise sucks). Reuters reported today that the Islanders had inked a new deal with Nassau County to renovate the existing arena and signed a 99-year lease.

  • KC falls below Quebec on list of NHL suitors?

The latest report on Kansas City's standing among cities clamoring for an NHL franchise isn't good. The Toronto Star cites an October 11 comment from deputy commissioner Bill Daly that gives good vibes to Canadian cities where the NHL once called home: "Both Winnipeg and Quebec have already done that (supported an NHL team). We'll see how things evolve. That doesn`t mean that Hamilton won`t be considered. It will be." The Star cites sources close to the hockey league that say "the six Canadia

  • Sneak Peek: Independence Events Center

Workers will be putting in long hours in the next few days preparing the Independence Events Center for its opening weekend. The building holds 5,800 for hockey. Its principal tenant is the Missouri Mavericks, who are 2-5 in Central Hockey League play. The team practices in an adjacent rink that's open to the public when large, skilled Canadians are off the ice.In addition to hockey, the events center is vying for concerts too big for the Uptown but not quite worthy of the Sprint Center.
