  • Wanted: Non-Thanksgiving food ideas

By OWEN MORRIS Right now I'm writing the Pitch Forks newsletter for next week and I realize that there are absolutely no events going on that are not Thanksgiving related. I even had trouble finding enough Thanksgiving-free links for breakfast buffet this morning. I like Thanksgiving. I really do. It's a good holiday but come on -- it seems as if every news site and party-planner is acting like Thanksgiving is the end-all be-all right now. Where's the blacklash?

  • Don't just go to a dinner party. Become the life of it.

Flickr: TojosanConversation is an under-appreciated art in a society more concerned with who can fire off a better 140 character text in Twitter (answer: Fat City can.) But Twitter won't get you far on a first date or a dinner party with strangers. What is needed in these scenarios is that fine art of jokes, anecdotes and witty facts. But where does one obtain such information? Why, from Dinner Party Downloads, a 15-minute podcast and radio show in Southern California that bills itself as "a fast

  • Steve Mann has hoes in different area codes

Steve Mann I used to put smug vegetable gardeners in the same category as militant bicycle riders, self-satisfied Prius drivers and people who can afford to cover their roofs with solar panels. But when a friend invited me to hear Michael Pollan's talk at Unity Temple regarding his newest book, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, I was amazed at the throngs of people who showed up. People obviously want to take back control of what they're eating. The same friend who took me to hear Pollan

  • Guerrilla gardener targets KC highway

The urban guerrilla arrives by bike, his plaid, farmer-like shirt unbuttoned and his hair matted with sweat from the near-100-degree heat. The dirt under his nails indicates that he's a gardener. But he's doesn't want to reveal too much about his efforts greening the city. He will speak only on condition of anonymity. His nom de guerre: G3. His tactic: hijacking public land for undercover food production.

  • Turn on your meat light

If you've been looking for a way to add pork to your bedside table, then this do-it-yourself bacon lamp could be just the ticket. In the Flickr account of how to build the light, inventor Kris Kelley suggests that it might not smell like other lamps.
