  • The cheesiest holiday light display

I usually hate it when people put up their holiday lights the second that Halloween is over. It's like, come on. We still have to slog through Thanksgiving first, so just hold off on your holiday displays until after the only pure, noncommercialized American holiday we have left. But then I saw these lights at the corner of 103rd Street and Metcalf in Overland Park.

  • Secret Santas and the Nelson-Atkins on NBC Nightly News

Finally! A couple of KC-related stories that don't involve the words "Funkhouser" or "Squitiro" made national news. On Saturday, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams aired this story (above) about how the economic downturn affects the arts. The Nelson, which cut back its hours, is mentioned around the 1:08 mark. Immediately following the arts story was this short one about our Secret Santas, with some touching pictures. Which just goes to show that all that Funk-and-Gloria lawsuit/settlement m

    3. Orange tans. I'm tempted to think maybe someone fooled with the color of this picture of Kelly Ripa (and it wasn't me). I maintain that Jen Chen coined the phrase tanorexic many Night Ranger columns ago, and like most awesome things, it spread like wildfire something really extra awesome. Try not to leave the house looking like one of these:

  • The 12 fashion faux pas of Christmas -- No. 12

Nadia and I thought it'd be fun to count down the days until Christmas with a list of the tackiest, most terrible trends of recent years. We hope to never see the following items in 2009. 12. Visible bra straps (photo via the Daily Mail)   There's a thing called a strapless bra, which is usually a good thing to wear under tank tops. There's also something called a convertible bra, which lets you adjust your bra straps into a halter or criss-cross style. Look into it, ladies! -- Jen Ch

    10. Nude stockings with open-toe shoes (photo via Soompi forums)   Now, I like wearing colorful tights with peep-toe shoes. Nude hose -- especially when worn with strappy sandals -- should be banned. -- Jen Chen

  • What to do during that delay at KCI

About a week ago, I had an early-morning flight out of KCI. I was stumbling around, bleary-eyed, when I saw this interesting display hanging on a deserted storefront in whatever terminal houses Midwest Airlines. The exhibit, entitled "Physical Kansas City," featured old photos from KC's early development days. Presented by UMKC, these placards also introduce us to the architects that helped shape KC.

They're Kansas City design-studio partners Luis J. Garcia and Nicholas Segura, who will be appearing in a skit with Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi.
