  • Candlelight vigil for George Tiller

Dozens gathered last night at the J.C. Nichols Fountain for a candlelight vigil for George Tiller. Amongst the crowd, reps from Planned Parenthood and the ACLU and Missouri state senator Jolie Justus. This slideshow reveals a lot of sad, confused and outraged people ... but also people determined to not let an act of terrorism like Tiller's murder scare them into keeping their mouths shut.

  • Last weekend's protest: "Stop the H8 Rally" for gay rights

By CAROLYN SZCZEPANSKI Click on photo for a slide show of the protest. The temperature was low, but the energy was high as hundreds of Kansas City residents joined a nationwide protest against California's new gay-marriage ban Saturday afternoon. With colorful signs calling for equal rights for gay and lesbian couples, the crowd was so large that those on the margins could hardly hear local politicians, including Missouri Sen. Jolie Justus, call Proposition 8 an act of discrimination and vow

  • Stealing Time: Now how about Herm Edwards?

One down and one more to go (at least). At Arrowhead Addict, Chiefs fans are celebrating the resignation of Chiefs GM Carl Peterson. The Addict also reminds us that "Genius Of Defeat" Herm Edwards is still coaching the Chiefs. Better get your season tickets now. I hear there's gonna be a waiting list. And is it too early to start the Bill Cowher watch?

  • Stealing Time: Michael Vick's dog lobbies Missouri Legislature for stiffer dogfighting penalties

Yesterday, Hector the dog lobbied Jolie Justus and the Missouri Legislature, promoting animal welfare issues. Hector was once owned for former NFL quarterback, dogfight promoter and current club fed member Michael Vick. Justus writes: "Today Hector was socializing with other dogs, hanging out with little kids and posing for photos. He was a gentle, loving example of why we should "punish the deed and not the breed." Hector wants Missouri Legislators to pass this bill making dogfighting a felony.

  • Jolie Justus is plugged in

Jolie JustusI'm really impressed with how plugged-in Missouri state Sen. Jolie Justus is. Not only does Justus blog about the legislative session, she also checks in via Facebook and Twitter throughout the day.It helps constituents like me keep tabs on what's happening in Jeff City, which isn't so easy in KC.Yesterday on Facebook, Justus kept us posted on discussions about adding nooses to an existing cross-burning law, and debates on animal rustling. But she really caught my attention with this

  • Jolie Justus vs. cervical cancer

Jolie JustusMissouri state Sen. Jolie Justus is taking on HPV. This morning, Justus will introduce Senate Bill 104, which would require public schools to provide information on the HPV vaccine to parents of girls entering the sixth grade and would also pay for immunizing girls whose families cannot afford the vaccine, to the Senate's health committee. Left untreated, HPV can cause cervical cancer.Justus made the announcement on her blog, Fresh Meat. It's the third time Justus has pushed the bill

  • Mo. state Sen. Jolie Justus marries her partner in Iowa City

Jolie JustusLast Friday, Missouri state Sen. Jolie Justus' relationship status on Facebook changed to "married." Then came this update: "headed back from Iowa with the 'ole ball-n-chain." This wouldn't have been a big deal except Justus married long-time partner, Shonda Garrison, in Iowa, where the state Supreme Court recently legalized same-sex marriage.Justus, Garrison and 16 other couples had caught an early morning bus bound for Iowa City to get hitched. I shot Justus a message of congratula

  • Talk about bad timing. Right to Life night at the K is next Friday

The Kansas City Royals will host the St. Louis Cardinals next Friday night at Kauffman Stadium. It won't just be any other night at the K. It'll be Right to Life night at the K."Come cheer on the Royals as they play the St. Louis Cardinals and support the Missouri Right to Life," says a line on the Royals' Web site promoting the June 19 night game. The timing seems awkward given that not even three weeks will have passed since abortion provider George Tiller was slain in a Wichita church. But th

  • Missouri Right to Life claims the Royals 'discriminated' against it

I didn't make it to Friday night's Royals-Cardinals game, but I've been wondering about the fallout from the unofficially named "Right to Life night at the K."A week and a half ago, I wrote about the objections of  season-ticket holder Scott Hartley (who just happens to be Missouri state Sen. Jolie Justus' district aide) to an ad on the Royals' Web site urging fans to "come cheer on the Royals as they play the St. Louis Cardinals and support the Missouri Right to Life."After the story appea
