  • Cookbooks of the pros

So I know yesterday I said that cookbooks do not necessarily make the best presents since a lot of them are bad. I stand by that statement but I also know not many (any?) people care what the heck I think and are going to go right ahead and buy cookbooks anyways. If you're going to buy some, might as well buy the best. To find out which cookbooks top chefs and food authorities use, I called up several that are in our local area and asked them what cookbook they'd recommend.

  • Local bartenders in the national news

The Chicago Sun-Times has an article this week about dealing with winter weather the old fashioned way: drinking yourself warm. There's the usual mentions and recipes from bartenders in New York and (of course) Chicago, but then author Seanan Forbes mentions not one, not two, but three bartenders from Kansas City. The first is Ryan Maybee: "Contrast might be the bartender's best tool. Kansas City's Ryan Maybee, one of the Midwest's hottest mixologists, uses a mist of absinthe to spark the senses.

  • Justus Drugstore in New York Times Magazine this weekend

If you're in the habit of picking up the humongous, five-dollar-plus Sunday edition of The New York Times, chances are you do in part for the New York Times Magazine, which has some of the best writing and profiles this side of the New Yorker. (For instance, check out this excellent profile of basketball player Shane Battier two weeks ago.) This Sunday, the magazine will contain a special extra treat for us -- a field report on Justus Drugstore. If you can't wait until then, the article has been

  • What the hell, Rachael Ray?

Just last week, I was semi-defending Rachael Ray against the charges of being Rachael Ray. This week, a press release inadvertently caused me to check out her magazine-cum-Web site Every Day With Rachael Ray.It has an extensive section called "Mapped Out," which features the "tastiest spots" in 40 states and 100-plus cities -- including such thriving metropolises as Bisbee, Oskaloosa and Berea (populations approximately 6,000, 10,000 and 9,500, respectively). Just try naming the states they're i

  • My mission: get KC named one of America's favorite cities

No love for the city of fountains Against my better judgment, I'll sometimes thumb through Travel Leisure magazine to get a better sense of all the exotic islands and wild destinations I'll never visit. But Travel Leisure has been making me mad. Like most magazines, it puts together annual lists ranking this or declaring the best of that. This month, it put together a list of the 50 best new restaurants in America and Kansas City was nowhere to be found. No Justus Drugstore (I know it technic

  • Mmm ... give me a little taste of Kansas and Missouri

This month's issue of Bon Appetit headlines its main feature "The United Plates of America." It's devoted to identifying the best and most uniquely American flavors in all 50 states. "Whether it's a slice of just-baked cherry pie in Michigan, an oyster and bacon sandwich in Louisiana ... there's always something delicious just around the corner in America."What follows is a "definitive" list of each state and its best dishes, drinks and ingredients categorized into buying, eating and drinking. The Mission Farms Farmers' Market is every Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. Here is a list of vendors. [KC Food Circle Blog]What's the matter with Ireland? Alcohol sales are down so much that the government might have to encourage people to drink. [Tir na Blog]In the melt-your-heart cute category come these pictures of the unique dining couple: a baby rat and leopard. • The Top Ten Outdoor Patios

The Italian term al fresco -- meaning "in the open air," to refer to a mode of dining -- dates back to at least the 16th-century, although the term is firmly rooted in ancient Latin al (to or in) and fresco (fresh). The concept of dining outdoors -- particularly in an urban setting -- is sometimes more romantic than the reality. Even a beautiful outdoor dining space, like Lidia's Kansas City -- pictured above -- can seem a little less charming on fiercely hot summer evenings.

  • 10 cocktails enter, one cocktail wins

Ten local bartenders put their cocktail knowledge and mixology skills to the test this Sunday on-stage at the Uptown Theater during the third annual Greater Kansas City Bartending Competition. "We're working really hard to showcase bartending as a serious profession and elevate bartenders in Kansas City to that level," says Ryan Maybee, the event organizer and partner in Manifesto. The group of 10 finalists was selected based on an original cocktail, with the ingredients ranging from ginger b

  • The winning cocktails at the KC Bartending Competition

Beau Williams of Manifesto took second place in the competition. With the third annual Greater Kansas City Bartending Competition in the books -- it was Sunday at the Uptown Theater -- Fat City caught up with organizer Ryan Maybee for a recap and to snag some recipes for top-flight cocktails. What did you think about this year's competition? We had about the same turnout this year as we've had in the past two years, but the biggest difference was the mood of the audience. I think everyone was

  • The hottest restaurant trends for 2010

Get ready for more mini cupcakes in 2010. As 2009 draws to a close, the race to predict big restaurant trends in 2010 has begun. The National Restaurant Association asked more than 1,800 chefs from the American Culinary Federation (ACF) what they planned to do with their menus next year. The survey results are out, and it should come as no surprise that considerations about portion size and local foods were at the top of the list. What might be surprising is that a number of Kansas City restau

  • Brussels sprouts: Love them or hate them?

Brussels sprout might be the most polarizing vegetable in the crisper. Some people associate the green golf balls with childhood edicts attached to the cleaning of plates, while others have discovered an earthy fall vegetable that's hearty and delicious. Sit. Stay. Good Blog. falls in the latter camp, with a post that discusses why this blogger is in love with brussels sprouts: When they are FRESH and ROASTED, they are not just good -- they are heavenly. Sweet, savory, tender ... my mouth wat
