  • Arts center still looking for $60 million

Last month, steelworkers installed beams between the concert hall and the theater at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Set to open in 2010, the future home of the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera is beginning to make what should be an ultimately dramatic mark on the skyline. The project could still use a little cash, however. A $60 million shortfall remains. Jane Chu, a spokeswoman for the center, says the $405 million project is 85 percent funded.

  • Kauffman Center construction looks cool

When the Sprint Center was going up downtown, it seemed like bloggers and others were keeping everyone updated with rooftop cameras and running commentary. I'm not hearing the same sort of buzz about construction of the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which will be a much more dramatic building by the time it's done (if it ever actually gets done, but that's another story). Since it's basically across the street from Pitch headquarters, I decided to walk outside and take a few pictu

  • Workers picket the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts construction site

On my way to work this morning, I snapped this photo of union workers picketing at the gates of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts construction site. The local news has mostly focused on the picket lines at the Truman Sports Complex, pretty much ignoring the other work stoppages throughout the city. So here's a look at one in the Crossroads. A couple months ago, Pitch editor C.J. Janovy snapped photos of the construction, which looks to be halted.

  • Construction continues at the future site of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

A couple of months ago, Pitch editor C.J. Janovy snapped some cool pics of the construction at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. This morning, The Kansas City Star has a big story on the project, which is still two years away from completion. There's a cool slideshow on the Star's site of construction workers and steel beams. I snapped these shots on my way to work today.

  • A river runs from 17th Street to Southwest Boulevard

About an hour ago The Pitch's tech priest Matt Spencer noticed a stream flowing down Southwest Boulevard all the way to the Interstate 35 overpass. He tracked it back to this alley on 17th Street between Baltimore and Wyandotte. Normally, it looks like this: View Larger Map Here's what he found  ...Spencer says the yellow stream of sediment appears to coming from the construction site of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Here's a look at the stream washing down Baltimore.

  • Performing Arts Center showing some skin

Its steel bones in place, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is beginning to show Kansas City what a $413-million concert hall looks like. The above photo, taken Friday afternoon, shows workers erecting a stainless steel exterior that will be visible from Broadway. The view should be even more striking in summer, when the sun makes a higher arc. For more pics, check out the Kauffman Center's Web album and photographer Eric Bowers' site.
