  • Lawrence is kryptonite for Heroes

Ever since NBC's sci-fi show Heroes came back on the air this year, it's been an interminable mess, causing critics and fans to wonder how the show could've fallen from a shining first season to the pandering crap of today. It might all be Kansas's fault.

  • The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop Poll winner is no mystery, but one Lawrence-based voter is.

The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop poll is out for music year 2008. Predictably, voters named TV on the Radio's very fine Dear Science the victor. To declare a winner, the Voice's music desk tabulates ballots from hundreds of name-brand critics, no-name editors and writers, card-carrying bloggers, small-press holdovers, MP3 addicts and various hangers-on. Among the collateral results of all the sharing of opinions is a kind of music-geek social networking. The fun of submitting a ballot c

  • CD Review: Truckstop Honeymoon (MP3 enhanced)

Truckstop Honeymoon Great Big Family (Binky Records/Squirrel Records) Eclipsing the blue-collar sass that often characterizes Truckstop Honeymoon is a melancholy sense of settling in Great Big Family, the latest album from the Lawrence, Kansas (via New Orleans), duo of Katie Euliss and Mike West. Weighing heavily on Truckstop's fifth release are themes of rekindling the fire of tragedy (We talked about what we lost and weren't into shame/How everything were different but we still felt the same/

There are very, very few local bands that give me goosebumps the way American Catastrophe does. SLIMMphoto Terrence Moore, the soft-spoken AmCat guitarist, backup singer and harmonica and banjo player, is also starting to pick up more solo gigs. I caught up with Moore, who is also a manager at the Apple Store on the Plaza, in front of YJ's in the Crossroads. We discussed technology, urban revitalization and Moore's solo goals. Lawrence-by-way-of-Austin's Spence and Kansas City's Crazy T have teamed up as 2 Year Old Kicks. Spence and Crazy T began making music together in early 2008, first collaborating on "Worldwide," a track that appeared on Spence's debut LP Still in School. Several further collaborations followed, and soon the two MCs had adopted a new moniker: 2 Year Old Kicks. The name represents what they value most in their music: quality, dependability, and freshness. Since the MCs reside on different

  • Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, August 25

Thanks to the very sweet comedy, Julie & Julia, the late Julia Child is finally at the top of the bestseller list, 48 years after Mastering the Art of French Cooking was first published. Have you seen the film yet? It's very endearing and Meryl Streep is amazing as the indominable Mrs. Child. The biggest laugh during the film, interestingly enough, was when the characters played by Amy Adams and Chris Messina watched this brilliant SNL sketch from 1978. It's amazing, but Dan Akroyd w
