  • Incoming: Stull at Love Garden, June 9

Joel and Shawn of Lawrence doom metal group Stull were kind enough to post a MySpace bulletin alerting everyone to their upcoming show at Lawrence's Love Garden Sounds next week. Matt NeedhamStull at last year's Midwest Fest They'll be playing their rip roaring guttural anger spewing into decadent stoner apathy with Florida's Dark Castle, who are touring in support of their recent Spirited Migration release on At A Loss Recordings. That's Tuesday, June 9, at Lawrence's Love Garden Sounds. The

  • Lawrence.com gives up on print

News stands in Lawrence are becoming a little bit emptier. Editor Phil Cauthon announced in a blog today that Lawrence.com will no longer publish its print, er, Deadwood Edition. "It's sad to become the latest casualty of a dying medium," he wrote, "but we're thrilled to be able to continue covering Lawrence arts and culture via our original medium -- lawrence.com, internets edition." Apparently, there's a wake for the paper at 6 p.m. Friday at the Replay Lounge.

  • Three ways to rock for charity this month

Sometimes it's not enough to simply rock out. You have to rock out for a cause. Arts in Prison is a non-profit organization that gets inmates singing and occasionally performing outside the jailhouse walls. Due to budget cuts at the Department of Corrections the inmate choir known as the East Hills Singers, who usually entertain up to 3,000 people per year, may not get to have any public concerts in the foreseeable future -- unless someone rounds up some cash. You can help out the jailbird

  • KC Live block getting its first local tenant

Scanning through the list of businesses with liquor licenses pending, I noticed an old Lawrence favorite of mine.Johnny's Tavern, the institution born north of the Kaw in 1953, is in the "awaiting documents" stage of the licensing process. That means I'm in the "awaiting drinking" stage of the process. The sports bar -- which has locations in Prairie Village, Blue Valley, Olathe, Shawnee, Overland Park and Lawrence -- would open at 1310 Grand, just north of Vinino. Johnny's has applied for a 3 a.

  • Lawrence Musicians to Give Midnight Serenade to Amtrak Passengers

Normally, this would be something I'd post in tomorrow's Friday Freebies, but this is A) Late at night and B) Pretty doggone unique. Visitors to Lawrence's historic 1955 Amtrak station are used to the sounds of growling diesel engines and the screech of wheels against steel rails. This Friday night, the depot will be surrounded with different sounds--the voices, guitars, and banjos of local bluegrass and old-time music performers, including Steve Mason and members of the Alferd Packer Memorial

  • Review Slide Show: Tilly and the Wall at the Granada

BY NICOLE REINERTSON What do you do when the tap-dancing percussion section of your band gets pregnant? Go on tour! Duh. Tilly and the Wall were joined by Lawrence locals Fourth of July and Fortuning Saturday night at the Granada. Dancer Jamie Pressnall, the band's sole percussionist, subtly announced (wearing a Peggy Noland dress complete with baby and umbilical cord) she is five months pregnant. Nicole ReinertsonClick for slide show.

  • Incoming: Throw Rag at the Jackpot, August 21

Debauched purveyors of rock 'n' roll hailing from the Salton Sea, Throw Rag are one of those bands I keep missing by just that much. They opened for Gogol Bordello, and we showed up right as the were finishing their last song. Every night they ever played the Replay? I had to work. Then, for years--nothing. Fucking. No. Thing. They toured sporadically, but never came through Lawrence. No music, no nothing. I figured there would have been a pretty decent tour when they released 2nd Place a year

  • Love Garden Sounds Is Moving

Lawrence's Love Garden Sounds, home of records, CDs, and cats, is moving. Don't despair, however--they're moving one flight downstairs and just a little more than one block north. They'll still be on Massachusetts Street, just not up a flight of stairs. All the info you need is on the flier in the window of their new location. It's conveniently displayed below for those unwilling to drive all the way to Lawrence to look in an empty storefront window (you lazy sods). They had signage in the new

  • Sixth Annual North vs. South Festival Lineup

This August 20, 21 and 22, the North vs. South Music Festival, which began six years ago in Lawrence, returns to Kansas City for the third year in a row. Last year and the year before, the festival spanned multiple venues. This year, the whole thing is at Davey's, making ye olde Ramblers Club your one-stop shoppe for touring indie bands from here and up and down and all around the I-35 corridor.  The festival was founded by former Cher U.K. frontman Mike McCoy, who now lives in Austin and

  • Flier of the Week: Chomp Womp Family Night at the Taproom

Monday, August 3 at the 8th Street Taproom in Lawrence brings the latest in Chomp Womp's series of Family Night concerts. These shows always fall on a Monday, come exceptionally cheap (in this case, three bucks), and present four bands worth checking out. Taking a risk on bands is much easier and likely when you don't have to part with much of your hard-earned cash, no? This show features Burger Kingdom, Demon Horse, the Kite Tails, and Continents. "More!!" is also promised. Chomp Womp

  • A Return to the Halls of Academe

Kansas City schools start today, Lawrence schools started last week, and KU gets going on Thursday, so I figured a selection of songs about scholastic endeavors would be appropriate. If you're going back to school yourself, think of them as elegies to your misspent summer vacation. If you've kids going back to school (like me), think of them as exultations of joy.

  • Incoming: Girl Talk at Abe & Jake's, October 1

Girl Talk plays Abe & Jake's Landing in Lawrence on October 1. It's a cavernous pit of a room, with terrible acoustics, but the place is like a goddamn airplane hanger, so you should really go to see hundreds of people lose their shit to Gregg Gillis' jams. Tickets went on sale today, and pricing is as follows: $10 for KU Student Saver pass holders, $15 for KU students with KUID, and $20 for the general public. According to SUA live events coordinator Tom Johnson, tickets are already going f

  • Throwback MP3 of the Week: TV Fifty, "Bath Time" (live)

Once upon a time, there was a show on Channel 38. This is back before it was "38 the Spot," and possibly even predating the "38 Family Greats" identity. The show was called Burning Down the House, and the half hour show featured live performances every week, taped live at the Hurricane. It's similar to what Lawrence's Channel 6 does with the Turnpike, but easily predating it (and its predecessor, Fusion) by half a decade. I very rarely ever caught the program, as it aired at a weird time

  • Throwback MP3 of the Week: The Sugadaddies, "Friday Night Shift" (live)

If you lived in Lawrence at the end of the '90s and attended a benefit or house show, you saw the Sugaddies. The band, which featured a full-blown horn section, played some serious deep-down funk, was sort of the collegiate version of the Band That Saved the World. The Sugadaddies played the Bottleneck, but I'd say the majority of the shows I saw them play were in some way, shape, or form related to the University of Kansas. I saw them for the first time at a house show the night before

Do you like music? Food? Beer? Have you attended any of the innumerable games scattered around Lawrence this summer? Well...the Kaw Valley Kickball League end of the season party is this Sunday night at Liberty Hall. Get your dance on, hang out with the movers and shakers around Lawrence (seriously -- business owners, musicians, and more people of import play in the kickball league than you'd expect from a kids' game), and just generally say goodbye to one of the things that makes summ

  • New burgers at Dempsey's Burger Stand

One of the best burgers in Kansas City ... is in Lawrence The much-touted Burger Stand at Dempsey's Irish Pub in Lawrence, Kansas, added a few new hamburgers to its menu last Saturday. The Burger Stand is the creation of Lawrence chef Robert Krause, best known for his seriously upscale Krause Dining at 917 Delaware. Krause added the gourmet burger business to the existing Dempsey's (623 Vermont Street) last February with chef Simon Bates. Customers order their burgers and fries up at the

  • What to Do This Weekend

Even though Friday Freebies this week was a great big bust, that doesn't mean there's not a bunch of cool events at which to make an appearance. Here are a couple shows we've neglected to clue you in to, and which deserve your consideration for a night out. First up is Popfreeradio's Third Birthday Party. It takes over the Riot Room tomorrow night, October 17, starting at 6pm. The show is STACKED. I'd list all the bands, but the folks over at Popfreeradio (providing you with music that doesn't

  • Tonight: the Queers at the Jackpot

Evidently, there must be someone smiling down on everyone who listens to pop-punk, because this is the second Friday night pop-punk show we've gotten this month. First Teenage Bottlerocket at the Record Bar, and now the Queers at the Jackpot? Hallelujah! Tonight, the Queers play with the cream of Lawrence's pop-punk crop. Granted, they are the only pop-punk bands in Lawrence, but since Bent Left got to play with Nothington earlier this week, and Fists Up! got to play with Teenage Bottler
