The U.S. Attorney's office in western Missouri issues press releases describing recent indictments and sentencings. Yesterday, for instance, came word that a 22-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man had been charged with carjacking.Occasionally, the press office takes the time to describe the accused by their profession (or their crime, if successfully prosecuted). So instead of simply saying that a Lee's Summit man received 15 years for receiving kiddie porn, the press release will indicate that

  • Man stole truck to make court date, police say

The Green Summit Dispatch reported that the 18-year-old Benton L. Ross allegedly stole Dodge trucks from Lee's Summit, Greenwood and Kansas City. But he had a good reason; he had an important place to be.By his statements Ross would steal trucks because he didn't have one, didn't trust others for rides and needed to make a scheduled court date.Definitely don't want to miss that court date. Hat tip to Erin in the Real World.

  • Rainy days, Mondays, sorbet...

What I've got they used to call the blues...wait a minute, isn't that a lyric from an old Carpenters song called Rainy Days and Mondays? Anyway, the other day, I was walking around Lee's Summit -- no, not like some "kind of lonely clown," will someone please get these song lyrics out of my head?) -- and peeking through storefront windows and passing by Poppy's Ice Cream and Coffee House at 307 S.E. Douglas. Friends of mine swear that Poppy's serves the best freshly made ice cream on the Eas

On July 4 at 9 a.m., a rally for responsibility will take place along Highway 45 in Parkville. The tea parties staged across the U.S. on April 15 protested government spending, particularly the $789-billion stimulus package. • Saturday morning's protest: Coffee and crabbiness with Cleaver in Lee's Summit

Lee's Summit hadn't seen this much excitement since the last Sarah Palin rally. By 8 a.m. Saturday, hundreds of people were gathered outside JP Coffee, spoiling for a health-care fight. Everyone was taking pictures of everyone else -- with cell phones, small digital cameras, big video setups. At least one "documentary filmmaker" roamed the crowd with his 14-year-old daughter. Lots of people claimed they'd shown up for what they thought was supposed to be a town hall meeting, which was bullcrap,

  • Archer premieres tonight on FX

If you miss Adult Swim's Frisky Dingo (Killface for president!), tune in tonight at 9 to FX's new 3-D spy toon series Archer. The show's from the same guys -- Adam Reed and Matt Thompson -- that created the bizarre but hilarious superhero spoof (as well as Sealab 2021). Good piece in today's Preview section from the Star's Aaron Barnhart detailing the work of Lee's Summit's Trinity Animation, which created the 3-D sets on Archer. Yes, the toon has 3-D sets. It''s going to be sweet. If you nee

  • Plenty of wine tastings to attend

Your palate can get quite a workout over the next 48 hours with plenty of wine tastings scheduled around the metro area. There's a free wine tasting at the Red X in Riverside tonight from 5 to 7. With an abundance of wines to taste, this will be the most fun you've had at the grocery store in a while. It's also an easy chance to walk out with a decent bottle of wine for under $10. The tasting is in the Liquid Bronze room and you'll want to enter through the east entrance. ODV (Eau de vie) is
