  • All the Record Machine MP3s You Need, Right Here (Max Justus, State Bird, Interstates, and more)

Well, mostly. If you owned all of the Record Machine's releases from the past year, then you'd have all the MP3s you need. But this is a good start. To end the year, RM owner Nathan Reusch has passed us a slew of MP3s 'n stuff from his local label's cornucopia of indie-pop. State Bird MP3: "I Saw The Light" from Mostly Ghostly MP3: "The Golden Glowing Mask" from Mostly Ghostly MP3: "I Don't Love You Anymore" from 4 New Songs ZIP: 4 New Songs EP Interstates MP3: "Uniforms Forever" from Run

  • Max Justus Releases 8 Remixes from Kanye's 808s & Heartbreak

Lo, it has come to pass. More or less. Late last year, Record Machine prez Nathan Reusch issued the challenge to his KC label's resident DJ, Max Justus, to remix the new Kanye West album. Justus ended up working with his eight favorite tracks from 808s (we're surprised he could find that many!), giving them his own patented electro-dubstep therapy, and releasing them to the world. Grab them here or by clicking on the album cover above. Addendum: If you pick up this week's Pitch, on page 33,

  • End-of-Day Roundup: Jazz links, Cake photos and more

A number of things plopped into my inbox, across my RSS reader and into and out of my pants today, so I thought I'd share with a quick little mixed-bag post here at the end of another day in Pitch-land. Bill Brownlee is jazz hero man of the day. Not only did the local blogger write this killer review of the People's Liberation Big Band's Battleship Potemkin project, he also debuted a jazz events calendar that's an offshoot of his jazz blog Plastic Sax. We don't have a review of Cake's sold-out

  • Wayward Q&A: Crackin' Nuts with Nathan Reusch

Nathan Reusch knows the music business. The man behind the local record label, The Record Machine caught up with me via e-mail and answered a few questions about local music, the music he likes and the music he's producing. The Pitch: Where are you Julia Parrisfrom?Nathan Reusch: I have lived my whole life within two hours of Kansas City. I grew up in Ottawa, Kansas and moved here when I was eleven and then moved away to college for a year but hated it and came right back. I love this city and alw

  • Pick up a new Max Justus track from Pitchfork

MP3: Max Justus, "Bending Space and Time" The new Max Justus album doesn't come out on The Record Machine label until July, but now you know what the cover's gonna look like. Get a taste of what it's gonna sound like from Pitchfork's Forkcast. The bumpin' track "Bending Space and Time" was posted there yesterday. It has a cool video game vibe to it without being hokey at all. I can't wait to hear more.

  • The 2009 Pitch Music Showcase Lineup

Ask off from work on Friday, August 7, ASAP. This year's Pitch Music Showcase is signed, sealed and ready to be delivered to a Westport near you on Thursday, August 6. The lineup is subject to change, but I kinda hope it doesn't, because, holy shit is this gonna rock. Lots 'n lots of new blood. Wristbands (21-and-up) are available at any of the venues or at The Pitch for the every-year low, low price of $5. This year, for $12, you can get a showcase wristband, a ticket to the awards show at the

  • Pitch Music Showcase MP3-ography: The Riot Room (outside)

In this entry: brand-new MP3s from Max Justus and Nomathmatics and a classic from Reach. The Pitch Music Showcase is this Thursday night. In the meantime, we'll be giving you an audio-visual taste of the 28 bands, DJs, rappers and solo artists who are playing for your $5 (buy wristband here) by posting MP3s and photos for, hopefully, all of them. Many of the songs the artists contributed have never been released until now. Remember, there are many more acts nominated in the awards than just th

  • Tonight's Pitch Music Showcase Lineup, Duh

Oh yeah, and here's the lineup. It's been up on our microsite for weeks, but I guess I never posted it on this blog. In redress for my failure, here, accompanying the complete schedule, is a picture of super-hottie Christie Brinkley. Hooiee! They don't make 'em like that anymore! 1. • Last night's tweets restored.

Though a friend told me early last night at the Pitch Music Showcase that Twitter had been hit with some kind of viral attack yesterday, that didn't stop me from tweeting doggedly and with great effort throughout the night. Of course, none of my WaywardTweets posted, so because it's easier than writing anything fresh with this massive hangover I'm contending with that is making it very hard to think, I have dug deep into the circuitry of my Sprint Katana II to bring you all of last night'

  • Pitch Music Showcase Roundup: All Freakin' Over

I'm not sure whether it was Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler arriving in their limo to a gaggle of paparazzi outside of the Riot Room or if it was seeing Kurt Loder interviewing T-Pain on the roof of McCoy's, but somewhere between those two sightings -- but two incidents within a major-media-filled, celebrity-packed evening -- I realized, Man, the Pitch Music Showcase has gotten sorta big. Then I realized someone had slipped peyote into Hefeweizen. Forester MichaelClick on piano cat for sli

  • New Stuff From the Record Machine

Lots of new tunes from local label the Record Machine, whom I've loved ever since they released the James Dean Trio's Getting Scary six years ago. They do quality work, these kids. First up is a proper EP from former Billions frontman Sam Billen. It's called Tokyo Sessions, and it's a teaser for a full-length coming later this year. The Record Machine says: "Sam Billen took a family vacation in June of 2009 to visit his in-laws in Tokyo. While he was there, he decided to buy an inexpensi

  • Saturday night's alright for Soft Reeds.

Reeds @ Record BarHey, listen up. I've been meaning to rave about Soft Reeds ever since I saw the newly revived local band play in late August at the Record Bar with Audiovox. Hardly anyone was there, but the Reeds were righteously on point with a set that kicked glam rock and prog pop into a mop bucket and sloshed the mixture all over the PA. The group is fronted by Ben Grimes, formerly of the Golden Republic, a band whose rise and fall has been well documented. (And for those just join

  • Every Halloween Show Your Little Heart Desires

In what we hope is the master list for your Halloween shenanigans, there's a lot to get through. For one thing, since the holiday falls on a Saturday, some folks are getting it started a little early Friday night. For instance, Fourth of July is at the Eighth Street Taproom (801 New Hampshire in Lawrence) Friday night with Sultan Sea. As you can see from the flier (by Pre Sense Form and Zaguar Collages, featuring the sexy Brendan Hangauer from last year's Halloween), costumes are not onl

  • MP3: Queens Club, "Nightmarer" (Max Justus Remix)

Well, we're a little behind on this news, but it bears mentioning nonetheless: Kansas City pop-dance act Queens Club signed to Tooth & Nail, home to MxPx and Underoath, among others. And, not only did Queens Club sign to Tooth & Nail, they just released their debut recording for the label, the Nightmarer EP, which dropped back in September. They've also recently tapped Record Machine recording artist Max Justus to remix the title track, and the label has made that available on their blog
