  • Jacko Links: Remembering MJ in the music world

If you're still parsing your feelings about the death of Michael Jackson, these readings may help. At the RFT, Annie Zaleski remembers how when she was a kid, Michael just was.Annie Zaleski As a child growing up in the '80s, there was no question that you liked Michael Jackson. It was just a given, a constant, something that was assumed. His hits - and that included nearly everything on Thriller, his duets with Paul McCartney and a slew of songs from Bad - were a part of your world. Jackson hi

  • Newsweek digs up story on Michael Jackson's 1984 tour kick off in KC

Yesterday, we posted a video from the Jacksons' 1984 Victory Tour, which started at Arrowhead Stadium. Newsweek dipped into its archives and dug up this cover story on the Michael Jackson phenomenon in the '80s. Here's how crazy people were for the King of Pop back then:In Kansas City, the hoopla began in June. When newspapers containing the first official ticket order forms rolled off the presses in the early hours of June 19, fans were lined up to buy them. "It's ridiculous!" said disc jockey

  • Concert Review: Stevie Wonder

BY ROBERT FOLSOM The tickets said "8pm," but they should have said "Sunset." ("When it's dark enough for the stage lights and video screens" wouldn't have fit on a ticket.) Eager Stevie Wonder fans had to fan themselves in Friday's heat and humidity while waiting for the pop music legend to come on at Starlight Theatre. Scott Spychalski When he did take the stage at 8:55, he announced that the show was dedicated to Michael Jackson, his longtime friend who died the day before. Also, at daughte

  • Remembering Michael: Did you ever eat a Thriller Burger?

Charles Ferruzza Collection Back in the summer of 1984, Michael Jackson -- who died today at age 50 -- was the hottest name in the music industry: His 1982 Thriller album had, at that point, been on the Top Ten charts for a consecutive 80 weeks -- and would go on to become the biggest selling album of all time. When the news broke that Michael Jackson and his brothers would kick off their Victory Tour in Kansas City, this town went crazy. A burger joint on the edge of Westport, Mitch'

  • Michael Jackson dead at 50

Michael Jackson has died at age 50, say the local TV news stations. Harper over on the Wayward Blog found a treasure trove of live concert videos on YouTube. Here's one from the King of Pop's Arrowhead Stadium stop on the Jacksons' 1984 Victory Tour.

  • Michael Jackson: dead or alive?

We're not sure what condition Michael Jackson's condition is in. TMZ is reporting that the 50-year-old King of Pop is dead. CNN and the LA Times are reporting only that he has been hospitalized for cardiac arrest. We at Wayward HQ salute the (late?) smooth criminal with this live concert video from the Kansas City stop on his 1988 Bad Tour. Take it away, Michael... More Jacko-in-KC footage here.

  • Michael Jackson Remberances High and Low

As the Michael Jackson memorial service gets underway at Los Angeles' Staples Center, I felt it appropriate to provide both high and low tribute to the memory of the late King of Pop. The high: A 360-degree panoramic view of Jackson's collection of pinball machines, as well as Star Wars ephemera and assorted other toys. It takes a while to load, but you can wander through the whole thing and check out the display, courtesy of Pinorama. It should be noted that this was shot at a Beverly Hills' d

  • The Michael Jackson diet

There's our world and then there's the world of Michael Jackson's personal chef. Kai Chase recently told the Associated Press about her experiences cooking for the Jackson family and about his last few days. She also just so happens to have a draft of an unpublished cookbook, Fit For a King. You make the connection. In breaking down his breakfast, lunch and dinner choices, Chase paints the picture of somebody on a restricted diet who also has the means to hire a personal chef. Granola for bre

  • Concert Review: The Donkeys at the Replay

REVIEW AND IMAGES BY IAN HRABE The Donkeys are so good it makes me sick. I mean, not really sick, but sick that a band can be so fucking good every time I see them. Sunday night at the Replay was the fourth time I've seen San Diego's the Donkeys and, like every other show I've ever seen them play, it was excellent. Ian Hrabe I first saw the band two summers ago opening for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, where the Donkeys earned the title (in my head) of Best Opening Band of All Ti

  • Alexander Austin tells us more about his Michael Jackson mural

It only takes a second for Alexander Austin to recall his finest moment impersonating Michael Jackson. "In ninth grade, I played football and we'd have to go out of town for games," he says, laughing at the memory. "And, on the bus, I'd lead a Michael Jackson song: 'Dancing Machine.' All the guys on the team would do the background, and I'd just break out. My coach used to get mad at me and he actually banned me from singing after we lost a game. But we did end up winning the city champions

  • Fans leave their own tributes on Austin's Michael Jackson mural

In honor of Michael Jackson's birthday on August 29th, a small group of fans gathered to dance and mingle at 18th Street and Troost Avenue, under the shadow of Alexander Austin's tribute to the King of Pop. The mural looks amazing, but the art isn't entirely Austin's. On Saturday, dozens of Sharpie-wielding fans added their own words to the massive painting. Here's what some of them said.

  • Video: Michael Jackson's This Is It trailer

There was talk that all the footage they'd shot at the Staples Center of the rehearsals for Michael Jackson's O2 Arena shows would get released theatrically. It's called This Is It, and hits movie theaters on October 28. The trailer is below. Man, this is either going to be amazing, or painful to watch. The director of the concert, Michael Ortega, said of the rehearsals, "It was extraordinary, and it was artistic, and it was full of potential." I hope so.

  • Get past the name and go see Wonkachild tonight at the Record Bar

Wonkachild is in the buildingWhen I told a colleague here at The Pitch that I was excited about an artist named Wonkachild, he said, "What, is he a candy raver or something?" Yeah, 23-year-old Jaqwan Sirls picked a stupid-ass name on which to hang a music career. But even if he went by Fetusmuncher, I'd be encouraging attendance at his show tonight at the Record Bar. Why? Because I listened to his whole album online and didn't skip a single song. It is, as they say, all good. I can clown on S
