  • Miller to show one-second ads during the Superbowl

Call it subliminal advertising that's not really meant to subliminal -- just cheap. Miller High Life and its lovable oaf of a spokesperson/beer-carrier Windell Middlebrooks will advertise in one-second bursts during the Super Bowl.A normal 30-second spot costs a cool $3 million during the Super Bowl, making the one-second ads a still-outrageous $100,000. The idea is not original. A band submitted a one-second Superbowl ad last year but was denied. Also, the ads will only be played in 25 markets

  • Incoming: Franz Ferdinand at the Beaumont

I said you don't know. You said don't you know. I said ... take me out. To Franz Ferdinand. April 27. The Beaumont. It's not up yet on the group's MySpace, but a not unreliable source tells us it is so. I wish they were playing just about anywhere than the Breaumont, but I'll survive. More dates and the best video of the year so far after the jump.

  • Daily Briefs: Stupid people control everything

Your job had to go live on a farm where it plays with goats and puppies. So while we're all pretending that the economy is like "the weather," and "just happens," and is therefore completely unaffected by human behavior or fiscal policies such as -- FOR EXAMPLE -- passing massive tax cuts while simultaneously conducting two unbelievably expensive wars and deregulating the financial industry, and also while we're pretending that we're lookin' gooo-oood by sucking in our guts and wearing baggy cl

  • Slow news day?

On Drudge Report currently. Yep, it's a animal story not titled "house of filth." It's about David Crupper's mission to raise chickens in Overland Park. Not that Crupper's idea is a bad one (or a new one), but widespread attention for articles like this don't exactly help Kansas City's urban-professional image. And the exact same argument happened in the Milwaukee-area last week.Besides, the Overland Park City Council doesn't even make a final decision on the issue for another month.I just hope

  • New releases, Tuesday, October 27

Creed reunited after five years and decided to release a new album. It's called Full Circle. There is no God. In what has to be the biggest release in Kansas City today, we get the tenth studio release from powerhouse rapper Tech N9ne, entitled K.O.D.. The title stands for "King of Darkness," and as you might expect, the album continues Mr. Yates' plumbing the depths of the human soul. The album also has appearances from the Oscar-winning Three 6 Mafia, in addition to the usual Tech N9ne

  • Monster-themed booze

Tequila and milk is the scariest drink I know. But it turns out there are a surprising number of booze options to guests this Halloween. The newest to market is The Kraken Black Spiced Rum, inspired by the legendary monsters of the deep (likely giant squids) off the coast of Norway that were said to snatch and sink whole ships. At 94 proof, this will put "beast in your belly."It joins Vampyre Vodka, which the Beverage Warehouse notes was "developed in England for the distinguished vodka drin
