  • The Download: New Matt Pond PA EP

For fans waiting for the follow-up to last year's Last Light, Matt Pond PA posted a 9-song EP on its website just before the Thanksgiving break. Here's what the NYC trio had to say about it on MySpace last Tuesday: "We took ourselves captive, and became our own producers, manufacturers, and distributors. It was a deferential revolt against inertia, a clearing of the throat to answer the quiet. Or maybe it was an inevitable reaction to seeing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. In adherence to ou

  • SXSW Partial Band List Announced. NEXT.

And, as usual, no one from Kansas City is on it. Yet. (You will be glad to know, however, that Dananananaykroyd, from Glasgow, is.) A coworker was wondering aloud today whether the festival would be as big this year because of the economy. Many of the unsigned acts that flood the city -- playing free shows any place that will have them, paying all their own expenses, sleeping in the van and so forth -- probably won't be able to go this year. And in past years, that's precisely how Kansas City

  • Calorie information does affect peoples' habits

With obesity the problem it is in today's society, there are several schools of thought on how best to eliminate it. Ideas range from promoting exercise to banning certain foods. Somewhere in the middle lies the plan New York City's Board of Health passed unanimously this past October. All chain restaurants must now post calorie data on their menus. Some chains, like Subway and McDonald's, are already open about their nutrition info. But many chains are not -- specifically the Olive Garden and C

A local girl needs help getting her beagle dog to shut the hell up and stop barking. Any suggestions for her on how to accomplish the task? [Abs Blabs] A midtown Valentine's dinner story that begins well and ends well. [JJS in KCK]Federal appeals court yesterday put another nail in the coffin of the restaurant association's fight to remove calorie information from New York City chain restaurants. As I've written before, putting the calories on the menu is having a big effect on people's ordering

  • The Download: Leonard Cohen Live

Last Thursday, the legendary Leonard Cohen performed in front of an American audience for the first time in 15 years at NYC's Beacon Theater. NPR has graciously posted a dozen of the songs on its All Songs Considered podcast (this link will fire up your iTunes, or you can settle on the streaming version). Here's the shortened setlist: "Dance Me to the End of Love" "The Future" "Chelsea Hotel" "Tower of Song" "Suzanne" "The Partisan" "Hallelujah" "Recitation With N.L." "Take This Waltz" "So

  • Missouri Rep. Jason Grill fires first shot for calories on menus

Before yesterday, I'd never heard of Missouri State Rep. Jason Grill, but the young Democrat from the Kansas City area's 32nd district has sponsored a bill to put calorie information on menu boards. House Bill 755 would "require food service establishments that are one of a group of 15 or more doing business nationally to display calorie information to consumers on menu boards. The caloric information will be required to be located alongside prices and similar in size."On his blog, Grill writes

NYC is a litter farther north, Vols. It happens every so often in a town like Lawrence: four dudes go to college, start a band, make a record, graduate college, party a couple more years, and get the hell outta Dodge. The Volunteers are no exception to the rule, unfortunately, and this month lead singer Tyler Jack Anderson and guitarist and keyboardist Andrew Kissel will answer New York City's incessant phone call. Bassist Rustine Leonard and drummer Austin Sinkler will stay behind for the time

  • Chefs salaries revealed

There is a saying in the restaurant industry: You can't make a living but you can make a killing. That pretty much sums up the boom-or-bust attitude. Even so, for most restaurant workers things can be a little bit more even. The industry magazine Star Chefs has released its 2008 report on how much one can expect to make working in a kitchen."Chefs might be the new pop culture superstars, but this doesn't exactly translate to more money for the average culinary professional," the article note

[KC Beer Blog]Massachusetts is close to passing a law requiring calories on chain's menus just like New York City. Only this time without all the opposition. • Incoming: The Lawrence Busker Fest, August 21-23

The Lawrence Busker Fest returns for its second year on the streets of downtown Lawrence August 21, 22, and 23. Last year's show was one of the most fun weekends I've had. You get a ton of entertainment, from fire eaters to musicians to living statues to acrobatics, and all for dirt cheap. The acts perform as buskers, meaning they get what you give, and nothing more. Still, if you see five acts and stick two bucks in the hat for all of 'em, you're still only out a Hamilton. This year's Fest fea

  • Is this milk supposed to be fizzy?

Occasionally you have to wonder what soft-drink executives are thinking. According to the Times Online, Coca-Cola is test marketing a carbonated milk beverage, Vio, in New York City. The four main ingredients are skim milk, sparkling water, fruit and cane sugar. For now, there are four flavors: peach, mango, berry citrus and tropical colada. It doesn't need to be refrigerated and the taste is apparently "like a birthday party for a polar bear." A review for BevNET.com offered the following as

  • The myth/legend of New York bagels

If you believe a New Yorker, there are New York bagels and then there's really nothing else that compares. Steve Fassberg is attempting to tweak that argument by recreating the taste and composition of New York City tap water in order to provide what he feels is the right base for bagels at his recently opened shop in Del Ray, Florida. "There are a lot of elements in a perfect bagel, but the key ingredient is water," Fassberg tells the Sun Sentinel. Like the doughnut conveyors at Krispy Kreme

  • The wurst idea -- a sausage museum

The museum community added a member this Saturday when the Currywurst Museum opened its doors in Berlin, Germany. It's a shrine to the 60-year-old sausage, which is deep-fried, sliced and then liberally coated with ketchup and mustard powder. Eaters have a choice of whether to keep the casing made from intestines on the sliced sausages. If you're asking why build a museum, the new director explains it with simple German efficiency: "The exhibition is a tribute to the currywurst phenomenon,"

You can imagine the title -- "When Good Chefs Go Bad" -- when Esquire recently asked well-known chefs to sample fast food, uncover the secrets of chains, reveal their guilty pleasures and talk about burger joints.  Top chefs actually loved several chains, including In-N-Out and Dairy queen, but spewed their wrath on others. • The Maya: Calendars and Cuisine

Let's party like it was 2012, okay?   No, they're not selling copies of the Mayan Calendar -- you know, the one that ends in 2012, which some people (but not everyone) believe heralds the end of the world -- in local stores, next to the hunky New York City firefighters calendar or the Kim Kardashian calendar. But the prophesies of the Maya are scaring people to death -- and inspiring new films like the upcoming Roland Emmerich world-goes-boom movie 2012. But the Mayans chan

  • A nation of calorie counters is still fat

The results are in from New York City's great experiment to determine whether posting the caloric content of menu items actually affects customers' behavior. New York University and Yale University recently studied the purchasing habits of people at McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Kentucky Fried Chicken in the neighborhoods of New York City with the highest rates of obesity.  About 28 percent of those who noticed them said the information had influenced their ordering, and 9 out of

  • Goodbye to salt?

Salt alternatives aren't common yet, but three new salt substitutes have been launched in an attempt to take advantage of several major food corporations' announced intentions to reduce sodium in their products.NutraSalt 66, SaltPro and SaltWise are all being billed as salt alternatives -- the kind that may be needed by Unilever and ConAgra if they are to meet their stated goals of reducing sodium content in their packaged goods by 2010 and 2015, respectively.Reducing sodium intake is likely
