  • Saddle Ranch Chop House rides into the sunset

I'm sorry to say this, mechanical bull fans, but one your own passed away this week. Saddle Ranch Chop House of the Legends hung up its hat on Monday.Yes, the restaurant did offer big chunks of prime rib served on huge stainless steel platters and it did offer breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as the drunk's delight (breakfast until close). But the meat of the restaurant was that bull, and getting to watch other patrons get thrown around like sacks of cornmeal. Now the only bucking bull in

  • Concert Review: Starlight Mints and Evangelicals at the Record Bar

REVIEW BY IAN HRABE While the Flaming Lips may have cornered the market on progressive Oklahoman music, on Thursday night, Norman, Oklahoma's Evangelicals and the Starlight Mints set out to prove that there is more going on in that pan-handled state to the south. Ian HrabeEvangelicals evangelize I entered the Record Bar with a battle of the bands mindset, equally excited to see both bands, but more excited to see whose show it would be. Would the Starlight Mints hold their ground and prove t

  • Incoming: Jonathan Richman to the Record Bar (no Vic)

Brooklyn Vegan is reporting that ex-Modern Lover Jonathan Richman and sidekick Tommy Larkins will be coming to the Record Bar on June 29. Fellow sardonic singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt will be joining Richman for part of the tour, but, unfortunately not the part that comes to KC. Unless Vic's eight loyal local fans want to stand up and demand he be drafted for one more show. Come on, guys! Dates are as follows: Jun 5 - Tucson, AZ Club Congress Lemon Drop Gang Jun 8 - Norman, OK Da Opolis Jun 1

  • Tonight: Over Stars & Gutters at the Replay

In what seems to be yet another punk show tonight, Norman, Oklahoma's Over Stars & Gutters will hit the Replay as part of a short midwestern jaunt in support of their self-released debut, Consider This Your Curse. Wes, myspace.com/overstarsandguttersOver Stars & Gutters plays punk in the vein of Dillinger Four, Off With Their Heads, and Banner Pilot. It's that gruffly emotional style of punk rock that seems to be in vogue right now amongst OrgCore punkers. Check the show out. It'll be c

  • Throwback MP3 of the Week: Shocks of Mighty, "Everyday Is A Holiday"

By all rights, you shouldn't be able to punch in a URL from a ten year-old press release from a local ska band and still expect it to work. Still, when I typed in the web address for Manhattan's Shocks of Mighty, their site was still in existence. Shocks of Mighty didn't last very long. When I first saw them play in August of 1998, they'd only been around six months, and they were done for good in January of 2000, meaning they weren't even a band a full two years.
