  • Stealing Time: Special Super Obama World edition

By JUSTIN KENDALL I concede that my Super Mario skills no longer exist. This morning, I discovered Super Obama World, a knockoff of the Mario Bros.Nintendo franchise in which you play as president-elect Barack Obama, crossing the infamous Bridge to Nowhere into Alaska to battle on the Palin estate and try to return hope to America. All the while avoiding pigs, Russkies, greedy lobbyists and a snow machine riding Sarah Palin. Yeah, I really suck.

  • The death of Wink part II: Trouble in Minnesota

In the lead-up to Valentine's Day, I blogged about the demise of Wink, the city's sex shop for women. Terry Richardson, Wink's former landlord, essentially told me that the shop failed because of owner Elizabeth Rich's erratic business practices; Richardson suggested she had abandoned the place. Some who read the post -- including Rich herself -- felt this was unfair to Rich. I believe the term "pile of shit" was used. That hurts. Earlier this week, I finally talked to Rich (though I didn't

  • Auggie and me

Along with about 25 other people, I shuffled into an AMC theater last night to watch the wanna-be cause-celebre movie Beer Wars. People hoping for a first-rate bashing of big business and big beer were not disappointed. From the opening moment, director Anat Baron had Miller, Coors and especially Anheuser-Busch in her bullseye. In an effort to save memory space, I stopped keeping track of the film's reasons Anheuser-Busch is evil but here's a partial list: It makes an inferior product; it's real

  • Claire McCaskill's health-care campaign contributions

So far, in our August-recess series of reports on local politicians' campaign contributions from the medical industry, we've counted up contributions to Sen. Pat Roberts and Rep. Dennis Moore of Kansas and Rep. Sam Graves from Missouri. We couldn't let Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill's week of difficult town hall meetings end without adding up her totals, too.According to Federal Election Commission reports from her first and so-far only Senate campaign, McCaskill had banked $11,906,356 in to

  • Jenkins, Luetkemeyer among lobby puppets in Congress

Lynn JenkinsE-mails obtained by The New York Times show that lobbyists working for biotech powerhouse Genetech and two Washington, D.C., law firms drafted statements for members of Congress to read into the Congressional Record. Among the dozen-plus House members who parroted language from the prepared text verbatim: Missouri Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer and Kansas Republican Lynn Jenkins. The statements, versions of which were prepared for legislators from both parties, applaud the recently
