  • Drinking in church: what not to do

I would like to preface the story below by saying I don't condone my youthful actions nor do I think it's necessarily a brilliant idea to sneak liquor into the middle of an evangelical Christmas church service. However in high school I had the pleasure of doing just that. I was forced to go to the Christmas Eve service by my parents. In an act of rebellion, I spent the time before the service at a friend's house drinking a bottle of Hot Damn. Halfway through the bottle, I cajoled my friend to bri

  • Kuties, Crashes, and the Construction of I-70: Cool KC Photos From John Switzer's Estate Sale

Yesterday, making the rounds -- a Crap Archivist must -- I came across a rich trove of local history: the photo archives of John Switzer, a former Star photographer and reporter. Switzer's collection is priced to move. I mean that literally -- he's selling his Prairie Village home and moving to a smaller place.I made off with six 8X10s at two bucks a pop, and there were stacks of interesting shots remaining when I left. (The sale runs through Saturday at 4910 W. 69th Terrace in Prairie Vill

  • Tomorrow is International Waffle Day!

Flickr: Monaz Sometimes it seems like food holidays are chosen on a purely arbitrary basis. I mean, is there a historical reason to celebrate today as National Chocolate-Covered Raisin Day? But tomorrow is International Waffle Day -- National Waffle Day is in August, in case you'd like to note it on your calendar -- and there's a legitimate reason to haul out those heavy waffle irons and mix up some batter. In Sweden, March 25 is celebrated as Vaffeldagen (also known as Varfrudagen, or Fea

For those of you who were wondering when the Power & Light District was finally getting the LatteLand it promised us, you can forget it. The deal fell through and in its place (literally) is the chic Savvy Coffee and Wine Bar, which opened three days ago at 1201 Main.Savvy is the brainchild of Richelle Broshous (pronounced like Brosius as in the Yankee's third baseman) who is from Illinois, went to school in Iowa and landed in Kansas City with an internship at a finance firm. She decided

  • Friday is National Coq au Vin Day

Tomorrow -- Friday, May 29 -- is National Coq au Vin Day! The Food Lover's Companion describes this classic French dish as "pieces of chicken, mushroom, onions, bacon or salt pork, and various herbs cooked together with red wine." One of the finest versions of Coq au Vin (pronounced coke-oh-vahn) that I've tasted in Kansas City is served at Cafe Provence in Prairie Village. But when the menu was last tweaked, by chef-owner Patrick Quillec and his brother Daniel, the noted chicken dish

Friday night, City Market Cinema presents Caddyshack at 9pm. This is for grownups only, as there's lots of naughty language and compromising situations. Besides, I'm pretty sure your 5 year-old doesn't want to listen to several dozen drunken twenty-somethings recite Bill Murray's "so I got that goin' for me" speech verbatim. They're also of

For all you DIY-Herzogs out there, it's time to get cracking in the editing bay. The deadline for submission to the Kansas City FilmFest is almost here. The contest started accepting shorts and features in August, but with every passing deadline the entry fee goes higher. The next deadline, which costs under $40 in most categories, is November 15, and the final cut-off for entries is less than a month away -- December 1.Entry fees vary by project length and category, and can be found at the f

Here are some random newsy items from my reporter's notebook.Chili Cookoff Benefit Great chili comes from the heart, so the third annual chili cook-off sponsored by the Wyandotte Homeless Services Coalition is a no-brainer. The event is slated for Thursday, November 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Wilhemina Gill Services Center (645 Nebraska Avenue) in Kansas City, Kansas. Entry is $5 with proceeds going to the Milla Massey Scholarship Fund for "youth who face homelessness."
