  • The Download: New Team9 MP3s

Neil Mason is best known for mashing up other artists' work (at times, to the chagrin of record labels), but he isn't afraid of originality. From his Team9 website: "I've spent the last few months neck deep on an original album - the first since 2003. 'We Dont Disco' is an electronic soundtrack to the days of my life. A little bit ambient, a little bit pop, a little bit dance......its a little bit kind of thing. If you like it then great, its free to download and completely copyright free - y

  • The Download: New Nickel Eye MP3

Before the Strokes reconvene in the studio next month, bassist Nikolai Fraiture is squeaking out a side project with the Britpop outfit, South, as his backing band. From the Nickel Eye band bio: "When The Strokes' hiatus began taking longer than expected, Nikolai reached into an old shoebox of poems and rants written years ago. With his free time, he began adapting them to music." The result of those idle hands is out today and includes guest spots from Regina Spektor and Nick Zinner (Yeah Y

Crystal K. WiebeWith her dimple and Australian accent, Lenka is just too cute. Lenka, an Australian-born singer whose songs have appeared on Grey's Anatomy and the new 90210 series, dropped a sugar bomb on the Record Bar last night. "Sugar bomb" is actually a lyric in her boppy song "Skipalong," as well as an apt description of her supersweet pop music. It's not at all "Dangerous and Sweet" -- another song title. Nope, Lenka and her love songs are just cute and safe and pleasant, even more so t

Dinosaur Jr's Farm is currently charting at #1 over at KJHK, Pitchfork gave it an 8.5, and it's on Jagjaguwar, home to such current indie rock faves as as Okkervil River and Sunset Rubdown. I haven't heard it, but considering those three facts, it's probably a safe bet to pick up Farm today and not worry about whether you're wasting your hard-earning scrilla. They're playing on Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, or you can just avoid the whole painfulness of watching an entire episode and check it out on

  • Concert Review: Manchester Orchestra at the Uptown

The talented Ms. Wiebe already covered Brand New's Uptown Theater performance from last night, so I'm going to focus on the opening acts -- Manchester Orchestra and Sybris. Sybris was a four piece that sounded like Bjork fronting every mid-to-late '90s post-hardcore band ever. Lead singer and frontwoman Angela Mullenhour had a speaking voice like any regular woman from the midwest, only to sing in a croon that also at times brought to mind Regina Spektor. The band itself took a lot of musical c
