  • Now Open: 801 Chop House

By OWEN MORRIS The 801 Chop House has more menus than some restaurants have items: a fine wines menu, a wines-by-the-glass menu, a bar menu, a fresh catch menu, a Sunday prix-fixe menu, a dessert menu and finally, a menu. Each is printed on a separate sheet of heavy paper; the fine wines menu is six pages with a six-point font. It's almost as if 801 Chop House is trying to show off. Actually, 801 Chop House is showing off. It makes no apologies for its train-magnate/oil-baron prices.

  • Tivo Alert: Check Please! premieres tonight

As mentioned in Pitch Forks this week, tonight at 7:30 KCPT debuts its version of Check Please! a television show that puts restaurant reviews in the hands of normal joes, for better or worse. Here's the basic set-up: Three people each pick a local restaurant. It can be fancy or a truck stop, pretty much whatever that person likes. Then those three people try each others' picks. After all the meals, they get together with a host to talk about their experiences. The show was created in Chicago (wh

  • VDay minus two: Dinner out on any day but Saturday

This may be a recession but any halfway romantic restaurant is booked by now. Hell, romantic or not, any restaurant that takes reservations is booked by now. So if you have your heart set on dining out this weekend but don't have reservations or just don't like massive crowds, dine out Friday or Sunday night instead.I'm not a fan of prix-fixe menus at restaurants that don't normally serve them, and most restaurants go that route on Valentine's Day. In this case, the prix fixe will help you avoid

  • Valentine's Day still on at the Drop, just in different form

I got a message from Eddie Crane, who owns The Drop. He had some news concerning the Valentine's Day menu that his Martini Corner bar had been promoting. Because the message contained personal information I won't reprint all of it but here's the gist: I would like to apologize for sending an e-mail so soon after our Valentine's Day announcement. However, we have suffered a tragedy here at The Drop that effects the very same dinner mentioned in that email... we must sadly announce that the s

  • Recession Relief: The Kentucky Derby at Sullivan's Steakhouse

I wouldn't use the word "thrifty" to describe either the Kentucky Derby or Sullivan's Steakhouse, but that's the case this Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. when the Leawood restaurant holds its derby party.Yesterday, Fat City speculated that $5 is the sweet-spot for restaurants of all grades, and here's more proof: Five bucks is what Sullivan's is charging for its mint juleps and items from its starters menu.In addition, Sunday is prime time at Sullivan's. That's when it features a three-course menu fo

  • Online beer sommelier actually helpful

True beer nerds probably won't have any use for the Internet guide Beer Sommelier. But for everyone else, it's a neat way to figure out the convoluted world or beer, where there are more than 20 distinct categories and a hundred sub-categories.The guide is compiled by Great Brewers, on a Web site started by a distribution company but run by beer bloggers. It features more than 250 beer-pairings -- from the boring, such as scrambled eggs (a Belgium wit such as Two Jokers) to the exotic, such as b

  • New fall lunch menu at Cafe Sebastienne

Grilled swordfish, left, and a hot Kentucky brown highlight the new menu. While there are plenty of new and interesting exhibits at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, diners should be excited to learn about the new fall lunch menu at Cafe Sebastienne. Although Executive Chef Jennifer Maloney changes the dinner menu weekly to account for seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, the lunch menu changes only seasonally.   The two new dishes that caught our attention are the Swordfi
