  • Herbs and the Fountain of Youth

I have friends who are always pressing old cookbooks upon me as gifts. "You can never have too many cookbooks," says Bernita, who found this little treasure -- a pamphlet, really -- in some dusty old thrift store. Actually, you can have too many cookbooks and I have to occasionally weed out my groaning bookshelves and give away some of my collection. But I'm particularly fond of Herbs and the Fountain of Youth by Claudia V. James, an authoress who apparently never wrote anything after

  • AIDS Walk goes to India

Erin Goodyear had a conflict. The captain of Kansas City's AIDS Walk Team was going to be out of the country for this year's AIDS Walk Kansas City event -- Saturday, April 25 at Theis Park. Not walking wasn't an option. So Goodyear decided to take AIDS Walk to India. But before she goes, Goodyear's getting a Bollywood-themed send-off thrown in her honor at Cafe Trio, 3535 Broadway, from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight. Cafe Trio will show Bollywood films, hand out awards for the best costumes and swap "Red

  • Wrap it up, KC. Men's Health gives KC a D- for STDs

This is bad, bad news. Men's Health ranked the sexual health of 101 cities -- looking at reports of gonorrhea, syphillis and chlamydia to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as county data on HIV mortality rates -- and Kansas City finished an extremely sorry 82nd place (and under the heading "taking your chances") with a D- grade. Ouch. Even worse, Las Vegas ranked as a safer city to get laid in than KC. Remember, you can look up (and submit) infected people on STDCarriers.com

  • Wrap it up, KC, part II

No wonder Men's Health gave Kansas City a D- for STDs. Jackson County has a higher rate of AIDS and HIV than most of the country. Jackson County's rate of AIDS is bigger than 81.6 percent of the counties in the nation. JaCo also has a higher rate of HIV than 92.5 percent of the country. That's what Danny O'Farrell of the National HIV/AIDS Atlas told KSHB Channel 41.  The National HIV/AIDS Atlas charts AIDS and HIV rates by age, gender and race/ethnicity in every county in the country. JaCo

  • Still time to get a free HIV/STD test

If you're woeful behind on getting an HIV/STD test, Kansas City's Health Department is offering free, confidential testing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday to honor National HIV Testing Day, which is actually Saturday. So if you're wondering what that sore is, go get it checked out at the Health Department Atrium, 2400 Troost Ave. They'll fix you up -- and also test you for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis, too. If today's no good, the Health Department also offers free test Monday through Wednesd

  • Yet another tool to measure Jackson County's nightmarish HIV rate

If you're interested in how bad the HIV rate is in KC - and it's pretty fucking bad, let me tell you - there's a new tool online to help you compare. Last week the National HIV/AIDS Atlas was launched as a sort of relief map of suffering. The atlas shows counties in different hues from yellow to red to measure how bad the HIV/AIDS infection rate is. It's supposedly the first map of its kind to let users examine the data all over the United States. The techonolog is cool and all, but it suck

Camp KC has a cool story about local radio personality and HIV/AIDS outreach worker Mario Canedo organizing the metro's first Latino Gay Pride event Saturday, Sept. 12, in Hyde Park. The free event is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 7 pm.  and feature soccer and volleyball, music, and discussions and education on LGBT issues. If you have a chance, you should check it out. I wrote a profile of Canedo for this year's Sex Issue. Besides talking about adult issues on his La Super X radio s
