  • Kansas' first journos: Indians?

For a minute, this looked like a thrilling journalistic discovery: two surviving pages of the Shawnee Sun, which had a sporadic run between 1835 and 1844, making it the first periodical published in Kansas (before Kansas was even Kansas) and -- wow -- the first in the United States written entirely in an American Indian language! As I stared at the two pages of the Sun reproduced in the newest edition of Kansas History (a quarterly journal published by the Kansas State Historical Society), I imag

Caenan Castle in Shawnee This week is full of events leading up to Sunday's Tour of Urban Farms (more about that tomorrow). Tonight at 7 p.m., All Souls Church at 4501 Walnut presents a free screening of the documentary Mad City Chickens, about people who raise chickens (sometimes illegally) in the city. And even if you can't attend the different classes and lectures throughout the week, you can still help by dining out tonight as part of the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture fundra

  • Needmore Discs is closing.

Erik and Colleen Voeks announced on Facebook this morning that their record store in Shawnee, Needmore Discs, will be shutting its doors for good on August 2. Thanks to Robert Moore for passing along the note. July 3rd is Needmore Discs six year anniversary, and six years is a pretty fair innings. Right? We've had some good times. Sold a bunch of CDs and records. Met some awesome people. Paid the bills. But as George once sang "All things must pass" and "all things" includes Needmore Discs. The

  • Frank Alvarez of Vinyl Renaissance on Needmore's closing

Because the announcement of Needmore Discs' imminent closure has sent ripples, murmurs and even shockwaves through the scene, I thought it would be a good idea to check in with that other Shawnee record store, Vinyl Renaissance, just a few blocks north on Nieman Road, at 10922 Shawnee Mission Parkway. • Breakfast Buffet: Thursday, July 23

A visit to 75 in Shawnee shows that lunch doesn't have to complicated to be tasty. [KC Lunch Spots]Bacon lollipops, the Japanese fruit yuzu and blood oranges are guiding the latest gourmet trends. [Houston Chronicle]Ice skater Brian Boitano is apparently going to host a new series on The Food Network -- critics sharpen your blades.  [Serious Eats]And finally, take a morning off from gravy and try these egg-and- vegetable biscuits. • Woman found passed out with a blood-alcohol level five times the legal limit

Shawnee police found a 20-year-old woman with five times the legal limit of alcohol in her system passed out in the parking lot and now Shawnee police are investigating Johnny's Tavern (13410 W. 62nd Terrace) to see if they served a minor, KMBC reports. View Larger Map Five times? Wow. That's damn near lethal, according to the University of Oklahoma's Police Department, which says a 0.40 is the "onset of coma, and possible death due to respiratory arrest." KMBC says the minor was in a hospita

  • Infuse your olive oil with some personality

The wet summer has probably led even the most minimalist herb garden to explode over the past few weeks. The good news is that, without a lot of effort, you can turn your kitchen into a Dean and Deluca by combining your surplus herbs with olive oil. Infused olive oils are primarily used in dressings and marinades, particularly on fish, or simply as a finishing touch on a dish that is finished cooking. Infused oils may seem fancy and complicated (an opened bottle will only last for about a w

  • Shawnee council member rallies residents against Deffenbaugh

When Kevin Straub was running for the Shawnee City Council in 2006, he took a $1,000 campaign contribution from Deffenbaugh Industries. But that, he says, doesn't mean he's in the pocket of the area's biggest trash hauler. Kevin StraubQuite the contrary. In Shawnee, residents choose their trash hauler, signing up with one of the mom-and-pop outfits -- A-1 Disposal or Superior Disposal -- or the giant Deffenbaugh. Earlier this year, though, the city put together a task force to study new wa
