  • Phoenix Coyotes in financial trouble but not KC bound

I'm not going to get my hopes up that the Phoenix Coyotes' financial troubles will lead the NHL franchise to the Sprint Center. The Coyotes may be looking for new owners or investors, but I'm not inclined to think they're an interstate jaunt away. Here's why: The team is under a 30-year lease with the city of Glendale. So KC sports reporters, save us the Kansas City Coyotes teases. -- Justin Kendall

  • Kauffman Center construction looks cool

When the Sprint Center was going up downtown, it seemed like bloggers and others were keeping everyone updated with rooftop cameras and running commentary. I'm not hearing the same sort of buzz about construction of the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which will be a much more dramatic building by the time it's done (if it ever actually gets done, but that's another story). Since it's basically across the street from Pitch headquarters, I decided to walk outside and take a few pictu

  • Bad news for poaching the New Orleans Hornets

Hugo the HornetHugo the Hornet won't be riding his scooter to Kansas City. The NBA's New Orleans Hornets exceeded attendance and revenue benchmarks, which means the franchise won't need financial help from the state of Louisiana this year, the Associated Press reported today. That's bad news for AEG and the Sprint Center. The AP says:During last season, the Hornets negotiated changes to their arena lease with the state to include the potential for new "performance-based" subsidies as well as an

  • Incoming Concert Updates: Bone Thugs canceled, Crue on the way

All-singin', all-rappin' Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are all-not-comin' after all to the Granada on April 24, apparently. We have as yet received no explanation for the cancellation. Refunds at point of purchase. But as if to make up for this tragic turn of events, the umlaut-sporting, scandal-rich, withered and wiry and still totally rockin' kings of glam metal Mötley Crüe are coming to the Sprint Center on August 9. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, March 21. VIP tickets hidden between Tommy Lee'

Infamous pop-rock nannygoat Rod Stewart is coming to Sprint Center on July 28. A special presale begins tomorrow. Here's the info. Presale Begins: Thurs. April 2 at 10:00 AM Presale Ends: Fri. April 3 at 10:00 PM Password: TONIGHT Public On Sale: Sat. April 4 at 10:00 AM Where do you get them?: Ticketmaster, duh. Since today's April Fool's, I'd like to take the opportunity to address a few rumors. 1. "Rod Stewart had a pint of semen pumped from his stomach." False. It passed through naturally

  • Kay Barnes wants an empty arena? Not quite

This isn't quite as it seems. Yes, The Atlantic did a story called "The Empty Arena" about the tenant-less Sprint Center. And yes, that's former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes exclaiming, "I very much want one here." But my "Google News Alert" is a dirty liar. Barnes' quote appears out of context. She's actually saying that she still wants a professional basketball or hockey team to move to Kansas City's Sprint Center. Good story that will hopefully keep the pressure on AEG to get a team.

  • KC's NHL 21 watching Phoenix Coyotoes

I was a little puzzled when I found this fax from NHL 21 on the machine this afternoon."NHL 21 is keenly aware of the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy situation. We stand ready, willing and able to assist at the appropriate time with the future search for ownership of an NHL club member in Kansas City at Sprint Center, when so deemed appropriate by the NHL Board of Governors. Currently NHL 21 is focused on the LA Kings vs New York Islanders game at Sprint Center September 22 this coming fall," said Pa

  • Report: KC's elite hot for some NHL action

As the Sprint Center gradually loses its new arena smell, the odds of Kansas City landing an NHL or NBA team seem more remote. But one booster is making sure that KC at least looks poised to snatch up the next hockey team willing to relocate.A weekly newspaper in Columbus, Ohio, The Other Paper, ran a story earlier this month suggesting that Kansas City was "the dame at the end of the bar ... making eyes at" the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. Delighted with the metaphor, the writer of the sto

Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas, stars of the biggest boy band of the moment in America, returned to Sprint Center last night to strut before a sea of adoring fans. • New York Islanders sign 99-year lease, then threaten to move

AEG president TIm Leiweke was right to downplay the rumors that the New York Islanders might get landlocked in Kansas City's Sprint Center. Not just because the Islanders weren't likely to skate into the Sprint Center. But maybe because Islanders owner Charles Wang is a little too unpredictable for Leiweke's taste (not to mention Wang's franchise sucks). Reuters reported today that the Islanders had inked a new deal with Nassau County to renovate the existing arena and signed a 99-year lease.

  • And now Paramore.

It's getting hard to keep track of all the cancellations/postponements of late. First of all, more on that Passion Pit thing. The Star's Tim Finn offers a thoughtful, firsthand account of yesterday evening's apparently averted fiasco: But it also seems reasonable for the venue to get a chance to remedy the situation, which is what the Beaumont/Back Yard did. The show went on and the stage was safe enough for the three other bands that played: Audiovox and the Roman Numerals, two loc

  • Concert Review: Kings of Leon at Sprint Center

It was a cold, misty night in Kansas City. A mass of people descended on the glowing orb of the Sprint Center to see a Rock Band with a capital "R" play spacious rock epics inside said arena. The Rock Band in question gave a high-quality, by-the-book performance with no surprises that surely satisfied fans but might not have won over many new ones. Scott Spychalski Now a short background: Kings of Leon is made up of three evangelical preacher's sons and their cousin. They go by their mid

  • Reminder: Miami Heat vs. New Orleans Hornets at Sprint Center tonight

If you read this morning's Kansas City Star, you wouldn't know that the Miami Heat and the New Orleans Hornets are playing tonight at the Sprint Center -- unless you saw the tiny ad on page three of the sports section. Two of the NBA's biggest stars -- Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul -- are in Kansas City and not even a tiny story on B9? Even with all of the local ties -- former KU stars Julian Wright and Mario Chalmers and Kansas State's Michael Beasley. Maybe I missed the story (I didn't). The S
